i came across this 1987 dime which was in a tin full of hundreds of pennies. I was wondering anyone knows anything about copper or bronze dimes (I'm not sure what there really called) all I could find was that it can happen that dimes are stamped and the top coating doesn't stick or falls off I think is what it said. Can anyone help me figure out if it is a real copper dime and what the value may be?
Dime should weigh 2.268 grams. Cent should weigh 2.5 grams. This info from http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint/?action=coin_specifications
Is what is should weigh? And the edge is like a normal dime with ridges but it's all just brownish color.
Thanks for the replies what kind of environment causes this in coins? It has been in a can for 5+ years could it have been because of all the pennies?
It's too heavy to be a missing clad layer. A cent planchet will not fit into a dime collar, so it can't be a dime on cent. I can see the nickel color in the splotches on the coin. Once again, it's just a dime. Nothing special.
It's from 1987. A number of things could of caused Environmental Damage. Maybe it was in the ground and dug up before ending up in the can of Cents. Cents would not change the color of the Dime.
