I need a little guidance on which tpg company to go with I have 3 coins in total I want an opinion on. the first is a 1839 Seated quarter. Upon further research I've found this coin to be attributed to an actual CW soldier. NPS link here: http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-...oldierId=2E310F9B-DC7A-DF11-BF36-B8AC6F5D926A I have also found that he is buried at Arlington. My question is this: If I submit this coin to any tpg such as:NGC, PCGS, ANACS is there a company that wouldn't grade this as being "Damaged" as some close coin dealer buddies have told me? this second numismatic piece is not so much a coin but a Unattributed sutler token. For any tams member; or anyone who has the new Schenkman token book lists the token as a R-9 and apparently I own 1 of 2 known. yes I confirmed this with Gary Pifer! In general what would be my best route to getting this slabbed? the 3rd coin is a Morgan dollar that would grade AU-58-MS-62 DMPL I used a Van Allen Meter to determine this. I could shave with its reflection! Unfortunately I don't have a picture at this time for the Morgan.
Go for ANACS, I don't think they'll go damaged, but the hole may require it. also, remember to send the back up support.
I don't recall ever seeing a Civil War coin dog tag in a slab, although I've seen quite a few at auction. Even if it would slab, there is no way one cannot call it "Damaged" in the numismatic sense. This coin doesn't need a slab anyway; the prospective buyer demographic knows how to authenticate it and those buyers who don't would only be distracted by a Details slab. In my opinion a slab would offer you little return. Might I ask what a "Van Allen Meter" is? Mr. Van Allen isn't involved in grading. The value of your Morgan will, of course, vary by the date and mint

A Van Allen meter is a way of measuring a coins reflection determining the "PL" qualities. I am at a local library as I do not have internet at my house so I will have to scan it and post it when I can get back over here with the material. Anybody's thoughts on the token? As for the outcome of the CW soldier yes from further research I've found that he died at one of the landings in VA can't remember which one and cant find documentation online but I did print it off when I originally found the info. Its crammed in my night table I will post that info when I post the van allen meter.
Maybe it is only PCGS. I remember reading that on one of the sites before I submitted some coins. Just looking at PCGS pop reports, price guide, etc. I only saw one under MS60.
Call them on the phone, describe the coins and then make a decision where to send it for grading. You may not want to send all 3 to the same grader. I like the history behind the coin. Please tell us more.
If you decide to go with PCGS I send in about once a month. Let me know and we can work something out.
ANACS or SEGS for the token and quarter. SEGS will put the most verbiage on their holder if you want to document the quarter's provenance that way, but ANACS is also accommodating if you have paperwork. Talk with ANACS and see what they'll do for those two pieces, and if it's what you want, send all three there.
The token-formerly-known-as-a-quarter will end up in a bodybag. I've never seen an engraved piece like that in a slab, and the hole really hurts it. Why do you want this piece slabbed? It doesn't need it, and most collectors of this type of material would prefer it raw. I've also never seen a piece like the other token in a slab. Is there a reason you really want to/ need to submit these? Before you spend any money on submitting them, figure out why... and give the company a call to see if they even will. I'm guessing PCGS and NGC won't, but ANACS might. Again, why? You'll spend more on fees than these are worth.
Actually, if you want a decent holder for the quarter, just buy a quarter-sized Coin World DIY slab. Well-stocked supply vendors at large shows should carry them if you don't want to place a small order with large shipping fees. You could also ask here or on the buy/sell forum if anyone has an extra they could sell you.
Yep. That's why I was suggesting ANACS. They will slab love tokens as exonumia and not body bag them. Other TPGs aren't even worth considering for this type of material.
