I made a post back when I was a new member about a counter stamped $2 1/2... did not get much info on it. I just bought another $2 1/2 with what appears to be the same counterstamp. Does anyone know where to find any info on this? New purchase: old purchase:
Cool (L) counter stamp, have no idea why anyone would stamp a coin with an L or what it means. Maybe somebody here has a reference book on counter stamps and will chime in.
Nice one , I thought it look like an L , even before looking at the reverse . Maybe @BRandM will know something .
I suspect you may not get much info from just a letter. Seems like the stamps that get the most info have names on them. Bruce is the expert though.
Now we're finally getting an indication of the size of James Longacre's ego. Wasn't enough for him just to design the coin.
That is cool! At least the L is on opposite sides so you can now make the claim that you have a complete set of L counter stamped $2.50's.
I think I remember your original post J. Don't know anything about these. They don't seem to be stamped for any particular reason...maybe just mischief. The stamps are so lightly struck that I'm not even sure they're "Ls". Likely they are though. Though counterstamps are exceedingly rare on gold coins, these have little or no additional value because of them. Just out of curiousity...did you buy them from the same seller? You might want to contact him and ask if he knows anything about them. I've done this often with sometimes surprising results. Good luck! Bruce
