I just bought this 1818 104a or 104b advertised as a 104b. A couple of things are throwing me off right now the die cracked on the right stars seem to go all the way through in hand. Sorry about the quality of pictures. What i can't figure out is why there is no dot under the R I of America. Any help would be appreciated!
Could you give us some straight on shots of the whole coin for the obverse and reverse . The dot may have been worn off as it is a 104a .
The die dot missing is not a problem, it could be from either 1) wear or 2) later die state and polished off the die.
That would Mae alot of sense! It does seem to be a later die state to me. I'm still trying to figure out if the bottom right of the obverse is another die crack or PMD
Does it look like it could be 104b? The guy seemed pretty adamant about it and just wanted to pass on the cool piece since he's not into halves.
I really can't see the complete obverse enough to tell , still a nice R-3 coin . But if you could take one straight on pic of the die crack it would help .
It comes almost all the way through. I can barely see something from 12-13. I don't know if it's wear or I'm hoping for something to be there. The crack does go all the way through 12 for sure! Will take a better picture when I get home.
I think it might rate as an 104b...check out how heavy the die crack above S7 is rather than the length of the die crack on the right. I wouldn't trust the R rating for the "b" state, however. Based on how many people I know who have one I suspect that it is closer to a high R-4 to low R-5 than to R-6 and I know that there are more the suggested R-7.
The good news is I'm pretty sure your coin has the die cracks to be the VLDS 104b (VLDS=Very Late Die State) The bad news is I personally agree with okbustchaser, this is not a R7. There are 4 different coins posted on the CoinZip Message Boards, yours is the 5th one I've seen photos of, so I would think its a lot more plentiful than once thought.
I'm just glad I have a really interesting piece to add to my collection. I payed $120 for this piece so I'm not mad about the rarity. Do you think I got a fair deal?
