If you had $25 to spend each week, what would you buy?

My question is just that. I am clueless in the world of coins, but I am intrigued, having found a handful of worn coins (1860s to 1910s) in a basement recently. My dear grandmother gives each of us a sleeved half dollar for Christmas each year. Maybe she is on to something?

How about saving it for 1-3 months and buy something that the founding fathers
could/would have spent at the local pub buying a round for the for the folks that built this great country.

That sounds like an interesting prospect, but wouldn't the founding fathers have made their own? Maybe I will have to picture them shopping for powdered wigs and guns lol.

What I would do is what I do now which is actually not anything, currently, because I go in cycles. Occasionally, I buy what ever interests me at the moment. My last coin purchase was the 1950-52 U.S. proof sets in June at $1250. This is much more than $25, but I seldom do this these days.

U.S. coins are nice, but way limited in designs. Now world coins varieties are endless. if you can not tell I am a huge world coin fan.

I think a coin with some Germans in lederhosen or one with a monk and a stein of beer would be cool. I would buy one. There are so many options and mindsets in this collecting niche. I have been seriously considering purchasing silver, but I guess that is another topic. Thank you all for the replies

That book that was suggested by longnine009 is a great place to start. I wish it had been my first book. You can enjoy this hobby with only $25 a week, heck event your pocket change can be fun. The bulk of my collection is made up of coins (tokens actually) that cost less than that. You have to figure out what coins interest you. Some people see a coin and know they want to collect it, others have to buy different coins and actually handle them before something interests them, and some people like everything! Just don't go maxing out your credit cards or spend all your money on coins you know nothing about. Don't be afraid to ask before you buy.

Personally I'd save the money. In a month you've got $100.00, in 2 $200.00, and in the 3rd month you have enough to buy a common date Gold coin. If you must spend the $25.00 each month, then buy a circulated silver dollar. Have fun and enjoy. :)

Excellent advice. Save some money and get a nice certified coin of a country or series you really like. A good start could be Morgan dollars, readily available in all price ranges, there are many toners, PL-like Morgan's, VAMs etc. and excellent books and web sites about Morgans.

PS: Not all Germans wear Lederhosen, actually it's mainly tourists from other countries visiting the Munich Oktoberfest, which happens to take place right now (you knew that probably...)

    Welcome to CoinTalk.

Grandma may be seeing who is really interested in the coins, so she knows who to bequeath them too.

As for what to buy that's up to you. A nice set of Mercury dimes can be put together in choice circulated with the exception of a couple.

You might start a type set. In the process you may find a coin type that draws you in.

Assuming that I'd see something I really wanted to buy every week, either nice raw Jefferson Nickels or Foreign Silver. Or a silver proof set with a variety in it. :)
