I've recently got this piece and judging by some of the assigned grades by the companies it appears to be a tricky one ! I'm hoping somebody may be able to help me here as grading this piece can't be the same as any other coin of its time..
Very nice example. Considering they are generally crude, I would say your coin is in the mid AU range.
These were made in 1822. I'd grade this one EF, based on the amount of detail not there, and the lack of any sort of luster. I know they are crude, but it just doesn't look like an AU should to me. I'm also concerned by the discoloration at the top of the reverse (which you have pictured first). Is that corrosion, or toning?
Being at work I don't have it at hand so cannot comment but if I remember correctly it's toning. I've not had a chance to take a proper look at it since I got it today. It was dark when I woke up. I'll see better tomorrow when I get a chance to get some decent light on it
This is one of those coins where the grading is all over the place. You can get anywhere from VF to AU for the same coin depending on who you ask. Overall eye appeal is more important than the technical grade here.
