I must've picked up this 1C in a bulk lot last year. It's not valuable at all, but I was curious because underneath the PCGS label/Grade it says: Series: 14 Coin: 127 It then goes on to list the PCGS identification #'s. Can someone tell me what the Series & Coin #'s mean? Was this part of someone's larger PCGS collection? Is it a meaningless detail on the slab?
PCGS gives each series of coins a number (Jefferson nickels, Morgan dollars, Lincoln cents, etc...) and the series number for Lincoln cents is 14. Each coin within a series then gets a coin number beginning with 1 for the first issue of the series and counting upward. Therefore, the 1909 VDB is coin 1, 1909-S VDB is coin 2, etc... This is on various versions or generations of the PCGS slab since 1998, either on the front or the back of the insert.
The Coin and Series numbers were added to the labels with the 8th generation of slab in October of 1998 and were removed from I believe the 15th generation in November of 2005.
This is why I like CT. Not only do you get an answer, you get a dang good answer. Never knew that there were that many generations...:thumb:
Without the coin owner telling us what the coin is, can anyone tell us what the coin is by knowing this coin is Series 14, Coin 127? PittsburghMom says it is a 1C coin, but as far as I can tell all the cent numbers are at least 4 digits not 3.
It's a PCGS label thing as described in a couple posts above. Such as this coin 1980-d 25c PCGS MS 66 Series 39 Coin 111. PCGS did this for all Coin series during that time frame 1998-2005 I'm probably wrong but I think Half cents are series 1 Large Cents series 2 and so on.
Thank you. I understand that, in fact I have several PCGS slabs with that info. My question is does PCGS have a database somewhere that I could look up this information? I know they have a list of coin numbers that are used for their submission forms, such as your 1980-D quarter which is coin number 5909.
I did some poking around on the PCGS site and couldn't find any info on this type of slab so I did a google search and found this cointalk thread. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-do-these-mean-on-pcgs-slabs.123205/ But did find that Condor101 literally wrote the book on slab variations. So are you asking if there is a data base for each (on slab coin series & coin number)? I don't believe there is.
