I won these in an auction and I do not yet have them in hand, but I could not wait to post them. The pictures come from the auction. I will post better pictures once I receive the coins. Vitellius Denarius. A VITELLIVS GERM IMP AVG TR P, laureate head right / PONT MAXIM, Vesta seated right, holding sceptre and patera. RIC 107, RSC 72, BMC 34. Divus Julius Caesar Denarius. 40 BC. Q Voconius Vitulus, quaestor. Laureate head right / Q•VOCONIVS above, S-C to sides, VITVLVS•Q / DESIGN below, bull-calf advancing left. Crawford 526/4, Sydenham 1133. I have been looking for an affordable portrait denarius of JC for a few months. I know it is quite worn, but the portrait has a lot of character. I also know it is not a lifetime issue, but one cannot have everything and I think this fills the slot in my collection quite nicely. As for the Vitellius, it is nice to have another one off the list and it looks like a nice coin.I really like the full obverse legend. So I need 4 more coins to complete the set: Tiberius, Galba, Titus and Domitian. Thanks for looking.
Both are great additions. Galba, Titus, & Domitian are fairly easy to get. Tiberius is easy but cost is the hurdle, if your gunning for the tribute penny.
Thanks Mat. I deliberately tried to get the toughest ones out of the way first. I have denarii of both Claudius and Otho. The Claudius was definitely the hardest to find. I am currently bidding on a tribute penny, so hopefully I will get that one. I also know where to find the Galba, Titus, and Domitian-I just have not pulled the trigger yet.
Congrats Orfew!!! I think you did very well also and if you could swing those you will have little trouble filling those 'holes' you mentioned....and I'm STILL missing a decent portrait of JC---I just have a modest Venus bronze of his.
nice orfew...both of these guys on are my to get list as well. very respectable "affordable" grade coin, i'd take 'em both for sure.
It still amazes me how well the bust/portrait of JC has stood up over time, especially in contrast to the reverse----I'd LOVE to have it!!!!!
OK ! Let's go once again (I love to show them to people like to seeing them, most people find them boring to death...)
