Going through some of my proof nickels today I found this. An 1881 S type #2 proof Jefferson that looks to be an RPM. What do you think? The first three images are my coin, the third is an 81-S type, #2 the forth is a 81-S type #1.
1981 S type #1 smaller serifs,dome surface, oval loops on the S 1981 S type #2 larger serifs,flat surface, circular center loops.
Its really difficult to make a call on photos of proofs..... those surfaces can fool your eyes and like wise they can fool your camera. Set your scope up on its stand, focus, turn the scope lights off. then shine a LED flash light on the coin from different angles and see if you can get some photos that don't have the proof glare to them... Trust me I know what your going through with proofs.... they are down right mean.
Nice find and it falls under scarce ( pink ) too http://varietyvista.com/San Francisco Mintmark Styles.htm
Both are correct type two and the mms-011 are the same style S. The two smaller images above are copies of both type 1 and type 2.
What you are seeing is images that are + plumb . If the OP lays the coin back what you think is MD, will blend into the mint-mark and now, know more of what you think is MD will show . Heres the image I'm talking about, it way + plumb .. .
You can see the rpm with you naked eye, a 10x loop it's definitely there. Shooting proofs is a tad bit a challenge . I will give Alan ' s method a try after work today and see if I can capture the same results .
here are some new images with the light source shot across the coin from different directions. To limit the back scatter of the proof surface. the image with the red arrows point to what I see with the coin in hand using a 10 x loop, I believe to be an underlying S.
I've got a roll of these to go over plus a roll of 79's both years had two S styles . So as a being man you think it's a rpm?
I think its the scarce MMS-011 . As we can ( coneca ) see thats the way it came out of the factory ..
Rick at varietyvista.com read the write up about the 1974 S double mint mark punch. Then tell me what you think..,
I hate that everything about the " CENT " .. Not to sure on the nickel, nothing listed there . Not sure if someone would say its a RPM or one of the other 2 known Mint-Marks for the nickel ...
