    This is driving me nuts!

Can someone please explain to me how you can tell a coin is on a wrong planchet!

Any pictures to show that will make me say "ohhhh ok. DUH"?

    THANKS!

Please post a picture of the coin that makes you ask your question. It would be asier to answer your question.

The only way I can explain this is:

    1) If the coin was printed on a planchet that is too large (a dime printed on a quarter) the edges of the quarter planchet will be flattened and nothing printed on them with the dime in the middle, more or less. It could print to one side.

    2) If the coin was printed on a planchet that was too small (a quarter printed on a dime) you will not be able to see the entire quarter.

I'm not explaining it very well but I hope that helps.

A quarter planchet will not fit in the coining chamber for dimes.

I know that. It was just an example. If you read the OP you'd understand. The first thing I stated was "The only way I can explain this is:" Stop being so critical and help someone! I see you offered NO explanation to the OP. As the OP said, DUH!?

These 6 days a week, 65 plus hours a week are killing me. In an hour I get to go home and start mowing 7 acres. Smiles, big smiles. That's about all I can do.

    Ok here it goes,
There are 3 types of Wrong Planchet errors that I can tell you about.

First, a wrong planchet minted in error caused when a planchet intended for another denomination is used. Best example Nickel struck on Cent Planchet. Always a smaller planchet usually ends up being wrongly milled.
Here is one that I own

Second, A Transitional Error is when the Mint decides to change the metal content of a planchet such as pre 1965 quarters made of silver and then minted on clad planchets. But as it always occurs, there are leftover silver planchets from 1964 that somehow ended up being minted in 1965. That is a transitional error.

The first thing you do is put it on a scale.

If the OP doesn't understand, then why give an example that cannot possibly work? I understand completely! You've just confused the OP even more. If someone said 2+3=4, is it being critical to say that is wrong? Grow up and develop a thicker skin.

Well they DO exist, but they received "help" in being created.

But they WERE made in the mint, just by employees doing it delberately and probably for their own benefit.
