picked up a new probus antoninianus a while back, my third probus coin this year. I'm going to cheat a little here...I don't have a Probus to share but I like these reverse types. Captives being trampled by a god? I think YES! Aurelian, AD 270-275 Ae Antoninianus, 21mm, 3.9g, 6h; Rome mint. Obv.: IMP AVRELIANVS AVG; Radiate bust right. Rev.: ORIENS AVG; Sol advancing left holding globe, two captives below // XXIS Reference: RIC Va Aurelian 63, p. 272 @physics-fan3.14 - you can usually find an obverse with better centering or strike because the importance of the subject. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also, in no way am I trying to take away from the original coin, which is a great example. Have you selected an ancient @physics-fan3.14 ? I would love to see it!
Sweet pick-up, chrsmat ... congrats!! Sadly, this is all I have to show ya in the ol' Probus tank ...
Jeeze Chris that's a top end Probus!!! Excellent choice. There is something about his coins I find more appealing than other emperors of the late third century. I have yet to score one but that may soon change. Guess who just moved farther up the list.
Here is a selection of the range of busts available from Lugdunum other then the plain cuirassed bust above Cuirassed from behind Draped and cuirassed from front Draped and cuirassed from behind More exotic variations....
Again => that's an awesome addition, chrsmat (very cool obverse!!) ... yummy!! Yah, I tried to ignore that Lugdunum mint lure, but I simply couldn't resist posting my favourite sweetie from this era ... yah, so please welcome back, Constantius-I!! Constantius I AE Follis Date: 301-303 AD Diameter: 28.5 mm Weight: 10.1 grams Obverse: CONSTANTIVS NOB C - Laureate and cuirassed bust left, holding sceptre over left shoulder Reverse: GENIO POPVLI ROMANI - Genius standing left, holding patera over altar and cornucopiæ; B right, PLC in ex. (Lugdunum mint) Reference: RIC 167a Other: Superb and bold portrait ... eh-heh-heh ... Old dog, old trick (but hopefully still a cute trick?)
