Today is Antonius Pius' birthday. Born September 19, 86 AD at Lanuvium, Italy and rule Rome from 138 to 161 AD. He was one of the Five Good Emperors in the Nerva–Antonine dynasty and the Aurelii. He acquired the name Pius after his accession to the throne, either because he compelled the Senate to deify his adoptive father Hadrian, or because he had saved senators sentenced to death by Hadrian in his later years.

Today is also my birthday. I did buy a coin for this day; however it wasn't an AP coin. This is the second coin I bought while in Poland, and, once again, because of the exchange rate, I was able to buy it at a good price (I think).

So, in honor of AP and me I thought I should start a thread by posting my new coin. If you feel like joining in on the celebration, post any coin(s) you feel appropriate.

P.S. Great new coin too! I love these Cappadocian issues.

Happy birthday, Bing! Wonderful new coin, made more special by its purchase while abroad :)

I have no Cappadocians but do have a ragtag assortment of Antoninus Pius issues from Roman Egypt.

year 2 tetradrachm, canopus of Osiris, Emmett 1373

year 5 drachm, Serapis Pantheos, Emmett 1676

year 11 tetradrachm, Dikaiosyne seated, Emmett 1377. This was part of my first "mixed lot" purchase, a group of four coins from Heritage. I didn't like this coin at first and couldn't imagine wanting to collect coins of Roman Egypt :D. Now it's one of my primary collecting areas.

year 13 drachm, Nilus reclining on a crocodile, although the croc looks more like a pygmy hippo. Emmett 1621, a very common type.

year 17 drachm, eagle standing facing. Emmett 1496 (unless there isn't a wreath in the beak, in which case it would be an R4 Emmett 1497... so it's probably 1496). This is my "pocket piece" and from time to time it take him out to play:

A couple more of A-Pi :). Boy, I really need to buy a quality A-Pi coin! He deserves representation with a higher-end example.

a semis issued struck in Syria? Another mixed lot coin.

provincial from Emesa, with eagle standing on the sacred stone of El-Gabal. The sacred stone was likely a meteorite, so here's the coin atop a couple of thin slices of the finest pallasite meteorite known, the Esquel pallasite :). The gemmy green inclusions are olivine. Peridot from outer space!

How correct you are! Some days I say, "I'm surrounded but I'm holding them off." That's still a good day.

Not true. If Doug was 20 when you were born, he's 20 times older than you. In 5 years you'll be 5 and he'll be 25. Now he's 5 times older than you. In another 5 years you'll be 10 and he's 30, just 3 times older than you. At that rate you'll pass him sooner rather than later. :)
