$1,000 and only one coin? Augh! Too much pressure! One point of failure! All eggs in one basket! Augh! Panic! If you're looking for growth limiting yourself to just one coin probably limits your chances for growth unless you get lucky. Markets fluctuate like the waves so the single coin you buy may just drop leaving you with no other options but a coin you regret (unless you love the coin, but it sounds like you're looking for value).

There are no guarantees, but the best hedge against loss is diversification. I would seriously consider, if I were you and we both know that I'm not, looking at purchasing least at 2 coins for that amount. That takes away some of the single point of failure pressure (well, it does for me at least).

But if you must have a single coin (it's your money, after all) I can only offer categories, not actual single coins. One, focus on something that potentially has value also outside of numismatics. Something with historical value or cross-over potential. Colonials fall into this category (someone already mentioned the Fugio cent, which are historically important and beautiful, but it looks like $1,000 will only afford you lower grades of that type). The other category, also mentioned already, would be gold. Though bullion may seem slack now, gold coins have a tendency to rise and fall and they will likely come back eventually. The last category would be any US coin from the 18th century. Demand and interest in those never seems to wane. Nice examples are typically 5 figures, and gold is right out, but you could find something decent for $1,000, such as an early copper. Or there's just a nice MS-60 or MS-63 Indian Head Double Eagle. Those are pure eye candy, have a Saint-Gaudens association and are, of course, gold.

Only semi-educated opinions on my part based upon my limited and intermittent travels in the coin world. Or perhaps it's a wish list... hmmm... I buy more medieval coins than modern ones, so that alone may invalidate everything I've said. Oh well. Personally, I'd buy medieval gold with $1,000 but I would also have no illusions that the value would rise. But I also don't buy coins for value alone.

Is it me or are SLQs become more popular to collect, particularly those with higher grades?

Did you see it on E-Bay? I saw it or one similar and was wondering and same thing. Is that a good deal or a high?

It depends on the coin. I realize 66 is a pretty high grade but does the it have eye-appeal? Colorful toning? FH designation?

Even so, $1300 is top-of-market for the coin; it'd have to be a real looker and you'd need to hold for a while or select the sales venue and timing carefully to profit on resale. $1100 would be more reassuring. That said, getting the absolute lowest price has never been a priority for me (I'm not rich, just patient) and I'd throw $1300 at the right one.
