1943 Walker full thumb.JPG Just trying to get a feel for good strike vs poor strike...what about this one? is it what you would call a "full thumb"?

I would consider this to be a full strike. You can see the split between the thumb and finger, the head has full detail and the shoe is strong.

Difficult to tell in the hold and the pic but it's a nice looking coin. MS-65 looks right to me. Nice luster and well struck too.

The hand does look weak, but finding a full hand is nearly impossible, so I think your coin looks great!

There is a guide to WL Halves.
The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars by Bruce Fox, 1993.
It has comments about the various date/mm combinations.
For the 1943-D the comment is "Strike is not a problem".

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Yes, the 1943D usually comes well struck. And yes, that coin is a typical example of the date. And yes, that would be considered a Full Thumb example.

If you are looking for truly full strikes, compare them to a proof example. Of course a business strike will never fully be as detailed as a proof strike, but it should be the benchmark. image.jpg

Now the big challenge is trying to grade pre 1921 walkers, as their strikes were weaker and they can be a pain to grade.

I think the "Walker" may be the best art we ever had on a coin. But I will admit to thinking it was Saturday when it was Thursday once, or more.
