Been in the market for a Quintillus, got this one pretty cheap. Æ(S) Antoninianus O: IMP CM AVR CL QVINTILLVS AVG, radiate, draped bust right. R: FORTVNA REDVX, Fortuna standing left with rudder and cornucopiae. Z in exergue. Rome Mint, 270 A.D. 2.65g 18mm Appleshaw hoard 305; RIC 19 var (cornucopiae)
Quintillus AE Antoninianus. Mediolanum mint. 2.6g, 18.79mm OBV: IMP QVINTILLVS AVG, Radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. REV: FIDES MILIT, Fides standing facing, head left, holding standard in either hand. REF: RIC 52, Cohen 25.
My best Quintillus looks tatty because of the remaining silvering: Quintillus Coin: Bronze Silvered Ant IMP C M AVR CL QVINTILLVS AVG - Radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right VICTORIA AVG - Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm.Gamma in right field. Mint: (270 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 2.87g / 19mm / - References: RIC V-I 33 Sear 11454
Very nice examples guys!!! I picked one up not too long ago myself (sellers photo and now un-slabbed):
Quintillus came at a time when coin quality was near an all time low. The best ones are not great and the average ones look really 'tatty' (perfect term, thank you, Pish). Mat's is not bad at all! I suggest not passing up well struck coins with most of the legend. Finding ones with ALL the letters on a good round flan evenly struck will be a job. My better one has 3/4 of the obverse legend and is probably as good as I will find in my bracket. Very Tatty: Less Tatty:
Agreed, not an easy guy to grab All those years, I've only been able to find 3/4 of an otherwise neat Quintillus : Quintillus, Antoninianus Mediolanum mint, AD 270 IMP QUINTILL[VS AVG], radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right [M]ARTI PACI, Mars standing left, holding olive branch and spear 2.8 gr Ref : RCV # 11447, Q
WOW!!! I just found that I, a Roma Res Publica fan, HAVE a Quintillus!!! I blame this on @Mat for exposing me to the Empire... Forgive me if my attributes are off... I do not focus on RE's Roman Empire Quintillus 270 AD AE Antoninianus Obv: Radiate, draped r, IMP CM AVR CL QVINTILLUS AVG Rev: Victory walking r, holding wreath and palm, Gamma in field Ref: RIC Vi 33 (?) Goobers in his hair...
This forum has a way of influencing purchasing decisions. You start seeing someone else's cool coin, you think, "My collection could use one of those" and before you know it you have one! Or something like that. I know I've been exposed to a bunch of coins (ancients and other) that I've added because I saw it here.
WOW !!! For a scarce, hard to come by Emperor in decent condition, there certainly are a mess of 'em here on this thread LOL And, OH YEAH, this forum has made me spend a ton of money too---just yesterday, I was 'forced' to put in several more bids on RR denarii, particularly attributable to Sulla and the 'assassins'..OH well, my nephew will love you guys in a few years----hopefully QUITE A FEW MORE YEARS!!!
