Tater I don't have much experience to base what i am about to say off from but I want to answer your question with my assumed possibility. I think the market for numistatic coin collecting here in the US can/is/or be easily controlled by one party, two party maybe evwn 4,5 parties of people. The way the most influencing names in coin collecting are few. The coin grading services strong and no more than 3 or 4 in numbers with rep. They might tussle at each other with new or personal claims to how they label their decisions over another etc.. Anyways where im going with this is, so few people have a solid grip in this market and with the rights move played can easily play around with coins and play with the numbers. But then ofcourse i do have a very agressive state of mind in approaching a business. Nonetheless, I have one more option for you that i would probably do in your case instead of blowing 1,000 on one coin. From experience I have noticed many people list coins on craigslist and desperate for money. 90 percent of the time ive found out these people have no clue zip about coins or collecting or value. Ive had one xase where i wasnt able to play it off and the lady caught up to it and chose to refuse to sell and perhaps do research because i jumped too interisti gly on them i guess. Go craigslist shopping. cha ching cha ching.
I don't know about that first paragraph f35?? I like WLHD's. So where would you guys go to find one. From what I've seen on E-bay, you can get a 1916-D, MS64 for around $1,250. I live in a rural area and got one CS 20 miles away. 100 miles to anyplace with more that one shop in same town. Next big show will be in Knoxville in 2 weeks, about 110 miles away(I say big, I have no idea how big it will be. Never been to it). So where would you go looking for a nice coin?
There are many online dealers who have great inventory and good pictures. You could also go to Ebay. I would also look at some of the big auction houses (such as Heritage), especially if you are starting to get in the $1k range. Be patient, take the time to look at an compare as many as possible, and wait for the right one. If you are looking at a coin in an auction but can't make it yourself, get someone you trust who is going to give you an in-hand opinion of it.
On the day gold broke under 1090, I was able to pick up an NGC MS62 $10 Liberty for $650 The indians always carry a premium (at least until the PC crowd bans them!) You might be surprised at what you can get for under $1000 if you do a bit of hunting around and study. If I were you, I would focus on what you are collecting - and making sure you can complete the collection. Buying random coins may fill a box with some marginal investments, but that is about it.
I'd buy a bunch of high MS clads . Finding a good one isn't easy, although I admit I haven't looked in a year or so.
You know, I don't own any Gold. Been thinking about getting my feet wet. Haven't read any of the books on gold. Have no idea what a good piece would be or would cost. Thanks, I may just look into that. BTW: What year Indian were you talking about?
I think probably the absolute "BEST" coin to purchase for under a $1,000 would be an authentic 1804 Silver Dollar. By that, I mean it would just be super sweet to be able to buy one for a grand! Huh? You wanted a serious answer? Buy any coin which is listed in the PCGS or NGC Price guide for $5,000 or more and it would be "the Best"!
Best U S Coin to buy for under 1K ? Ain't gonna tell you. I'd have to pay too much for the niche on which I have decided.......
I was looking at a 1930 Standing Liberty Quarter Slab MS 66 with CAC sticker at around $1300. Good deal or NOT ?
