1837 1¢ PCGS VF-30 Medium Letters.
(I can't find any variety labeled "Medium Letters".)
But I've got it tentatively as an N-6.

The S in stateS makes this a small letter, but looking again I see a medium letter with the same placement. It's maddening at times.

I'm pretty sure I've got it now.
It's an N-7 (R-1).

 

AND...
after spending an hour or so IDing the coin, I find I already have it.
Oh, well.
The practice was good for me.

 

Watch out kanga, it might be practice for you, but your wife may think it's early dementia. Mine does! Glad you found the answer thanks for sharing.

 

At my age dementia is becoming firmly seated.
