The SLQ is one of my favorite quarters (after seated) and I know a lot of people really like them too. They are definitely a great suggestion, but I just wanted to clarify that particular grade for the OP.
I've been thinking of posting a similar question. Since it has gotten such a good response, I propose a contest.(For spit and giggles) I have $1000 that I have put aside for buying coins. Please help with the rules everyone. I'm thinking the top 5 likes. Then narrowing that down to one or if anyone else is willing to buy. We can see who made the right chose. We'll sell in a year. What about it? Any body else in? I'll tell you right now I like Walkers. I'm looking for one right now. Or don't buy something that was suggested. Pick you own. Let's try to pick and buy our coin or coins($1,000 +/-$100) by the end of September. God willing, we'll be back next Sep. and see who made the right choice.
How about a key early commem in MS64? Commems are at a trough and I think they will start to rise again. I still like the SLQ idea though.
You know I have heard that commems are down from a couple of different sources. My question other than the standard supply and demand is what is causing them to be down or why are they not popular right now? What might make this trend change? Just trying to understand the commem market a little because I've heard a lot of people say that they are the lowest they have been in like twenty years, so does this happen often with commems, all of the ups and downs?
I would buy a high AU or MS coin from the bust or seated series. Why? Because I wouldn't be happy with an F-12 Lincoln, no matter which year or mm. So please look at coins you really like and buy one you'll still love even if you can't make a profit after a couple of years.
I'd personally go for large cents or a colonial. The colonials may not appreciate in value as fast, but they sure are cool.
Frank, as an avid barber collector myself, please point me to a place I can find a choice BU 14-P 1/2 for under 1k.
A nice problem free circulated Fugio would be a good choice. That is one of my dream coins. It's the first coin minted under authority of the US and pieces without issues are hard to find.
I read it and my first thought was, nope. Don't want to do it. I love the hunt, finding the right coin for me. Why would I want to turn around and sell it? In addition, there is no "right choice". IMO, it's not an all or nothing game. My opinion is from one collectors view. If I were a dealer, my response would likely be different.
Thank you. I see your point. One wouldn't have to sell it. One could go by the market value. I did get some good ideas from this tread. I hadn't heard that the mint was going to make one hundredth anniversary commemoratives of the coins released in 1916. If they do I see these coins rising in value quickly. JMO
The best coin to buy is the one that you find attractive, and which fits with the set you are trying to build. If you're accumulating a hoard then it doesn't really matter what you buy.
