Here's a coin that probably has very little interest to most people, and no interest to the others, but does anyone know what it is? Safe travels Bing. 14mm, 3.0g
Is this a quiz or are you searching for an attribution? I don't immediately recognize it but am interested. The reverse... is that Roma/Athena/other, holding a statue of Nike/Victory/other in her right hand? Shield or helmet in left hand? Palm front in lower left field? I can't tell make much out of the obverse. It looks a bit like a soldier or king kneeling, with shield right. Is it truly anepigraphic or are the legends just worn or off flan?
It's not a quiz. I just have never been able to ID it. Can't see any legends, but hope I would someday attribute it by image, size and weight. Looks to me like Athena holding Nike in the right image and maybe a trophy in the left, but what's the large whale shape to the right in the left image?
Here are some Lancaster City parking tokens from the 1990's, the ancient days when behemoths roamed the earth and you couldn't pay for parking with plastic.
@Bing Trying to answer your call for interesting coins... Lately, I have been fascinated with the ancient and medieval history of Sri Lanka and their relationship with the various Tamil races in Southern India. You might remember I purchased some Lakshmi plaque coins
here's something interesting(ish). i picked up this song dynasty coin, it has another coin stuck to it, with a kind of sediment type stuff. (sellers pic) i'm currently working on getting them apart. i purchased these coins from the same seller several years ago, they came apart after a couple of weeks of soaking.
Very interesting Chris. Now that you can ID both coins individually you can tell us a date range, is there an overlap of issue? I would like to know more on the particulars of the two coins.
Ok Tif, i was going to start a thread while Steve's been gone, but I've been off the chart busy. since we did abc's for emperor and city's we should start a thread of abc's of animals, buildings, things, everyone could play. like (A) alligator, alter, antler, so on, day after go to (B) bee, Bass. beer glass. Steve would have time to catch up!! So tif you sound ready to host.. let er rip.. jw you keep safe over there and don't speak any English...
AN, i had to dig out the coins..i couldn't remember. they're both northern song coins, not to far apart in date. the top pic is a huang song tong bao, 1039-1054 AD, the second was a yuan feng tong bao, 1078-1085 AD.
Thats interesting you can now saw the HSTB was still in use as late as 1078, based on the fact it is stuck to a coin with later date, or the later coin YFTB was used earlier. Interesting.
this is interesting.... http://www.businessinsider.com/song-made-using-coins-drummer-music-video-2015-7
Wrong thread, you'll get more love for them in the "Let's See Your Exonumia" thread. There is everything from worthless gaming tokens to high dollar medals. I'm working on a future ancient American military token set. It will be an awesome hoard two thousand years from now...as long as the archeologists don't future Dremel them to oblivion.
I would like to make a legitimate contribution here: I've been trying to study the ancient eastern empires, the below coins have inspired my curiosity: Indo-Scythians, King Maues 90-57 BCE (per CoinIndia; elsewhere, shown as 125-85 BCE) AE hemi-obol, 9.5 gm, 20 x 23 mm Obv: Elephant walking right, with raised trunk, within rectangular dotted border; Greek legend around, BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩN MEΓAΛOY MAYOY Rev: King seated cross-legged facing oncouch, within rectangular border, monogram above right, Kharoshthi legend around:rajatirajasa mahatasa moasa Ref: MIG 734a, Sen 15.1 (reference coinIndia) Azes II*, Indo-Scythians, BC 57 -12 AR, drachm, 2g, 16mm; 6h, uncertain mint west of Taxila Obv.: BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩΣ MEΓAΛOY AZOY; king on horseback right, raising right hand holding whip in left, Kharosthi letter "ņa" before Rev.: Kharoshthi legend around: maharajasa rajadirajasa mahatasa ayasa;Pallas-Athena standing right with shield and spear, monograms on either side There should be a period under the n but my computer won't cooperate. Also, I would like to talk a bit more about why I find these so interesting...but it's about my bedtime.
Interesting coins Chris - what source do you use to attribute Chinese cash coins? I've been wanting a coin from the time of Emperor Han Wudi, but my understanding it that it is really difficult to distinguish the time of Han coins
