I've been working for quite some time on building a Numismatic Library of my own to use as reference in my collecting career. It's currently pretty balanced and has a couple rarities... But it can always be expanded upon, as you know perfection is never fully achieved. I'm posting this as a sort of living thread to help others build their libraries as well and also help keep track of mine as it grows and get feedback on what is missing or could be added. Bowers' publications have excellent information, but sometimes in his writing he can be very long winded.
One of my favorite references you left out is "A guide book of modern United States Proof coin sets" by David W. Lange. This book was made in 2005, so it only covers U.S. proof sets from 1936-2005.
How about Roger W. Burdette's From Mine to Mint? Also Early United States Quarters 1796-1838 by Steve Tompkins if you like those.
I spoke with a well respected collector (and author) of seated material recently and he divulged that Flynns books are FULL of errors, minimal credit to contributors, little knowledge about the subjects he writes other than what he has read or by someone providing info to him. Also said to check his intros, he uses the same template so frequently that he forgets to edit them and you have intros talking about barber quarters when the book is about Indian head cents <not a specific example. Also told me that well respected collectors, dealers, and authors in the seated series are NOT helping Flynn due to those issues and that he has to go find his own material to write about. To top it all off he is writing about series that he doesn't even personally collect. How could you ever know the nuances in a series like seated quarters of you don't even collect them? What type of information and how useful is it if the leading experts in the series refuse to help you? Like Frank said, save your money if you are considering a book from Flynn. Likely there is a much better and more legitimate reference available.
Are you familiar with David Sklow? Apparently his final book auction is coming to a close in October. I don't know why he is giving up these auctions, but his service is second to none and there is always a book in his catalogue that is worth placing a bid on.
Someone like @CBJesse needs to take his place. He has a passion for books too and someone I see regularly selling them. It would also be nice to have a site dedicated to selling numismatic literature. It's hard trying to locate books scattered across obscure dealers. When I was introduced to a Sklow auction last year by Jesse I was immediately impressed and so thankful for that valuable resource. It's a shame to see him go.
I barely caught the announcement myself since it was buried at the very end. Just happened to see it and notice what it was trying to convey. I'm pretty saddened by this.
