By the sellers feedback rating it seems he/she is able to negotiate the ebay process quite well. Offering you the return has enabled a buyers burden if you will and a relatively safe transaction. In a real live auction situation outside of ebay the buyer would always be stuck with it as most items are sold as is where is.

But I agree after the return a little more research on the sellers part is needed. Nobody wants returns so getting all the info out there is best.

It's always risky in any situation to trade, I'm glad you found out quickly and came out with with a bit more information and was able to get back to square one.

Not sure you can if the transaction was cancelled through the eBay process.

Wait, so there is a possibility, however small that may be that the medal the seller is selling is potentially legitimate? If there is a small reference to another medal yet all other records no longer exist, doesn't the possibility at least exist for this medal to be legitimate. I mean you yourself listed you found one reference to a similar medal.

It seems like the seller had absolutely no issue with taking the medal back and refunding your money. Perhaps they believe the medal is this other version that is scarcely listed. I don't think that really warrants defaming them "flintlock_coin_bullion is not an honest seller" on a public forum by stating they are dishonest. Just an aside but it also opens you up to potentially legal liability if the seller wanted to push the defamation matter into civil courts because a statement like that on a public forum can certainly cause harm to a sellers business.

I never meant to imply that a medal like this did not exist. What I am saying is that this medal from what the ANS (American Numismatic Society) shows is a copy of the original. Also how many times do you find a medal that is a (what I believe) is a bronze painted white medal that was further painted with a clear glaze. I am the only person here who held this medal and saw a chip of the bronze come off revealing the white metal. This is what caused me to check the weight of the medal against the ANS archive. I found that the weight was at least 20 grams off that, to myself, confirmed this is a copy. Copies and forgeries exist outside of coins. Many people also forge medals. You may not think this is profitable, but some medals cost a thousand dollars or more. While many times especially with coins the seller/dealer knows more about the item than the buyer, the situation is reversed with medals. I am sure that in this situation, I know more than the seller. Rather from everything I have seen and learned through research shows this medal is a copy.

When I first received this medal I thought it would be okay and gave feed back at that time, only after studying it did I discover that it was a copy. After over a thousand transactions on Ebay, I have only given one negative.

I think this thread has gone far enough based on responses. Unless someone comes up with an actual second or third medal , let us close this. I understand wanting to warn others of deceit. I do not understand why the seller's not taking your response as a "copy" as truth is being dishonest, as many do not read forum sites and do not know of people's reputations . Dishonest is a harsh word for someone not agreeing with your opinion ( accurate or not). Also did he not accept the return after you had tried to remove 'verdigris' ( msg 5) from the medal? Most sellers, if they knew, would void the return as tampering. What now if he is on a site and says you are dishonest for tampering with the medal and then returning it?

You're sure taking a big leap , by calling Lea dishonest . I think being a mod has really gone to your head as it seems you'll delete anything you don't like or agree with . Like this will probably be .

After reading your post again you didn't call Lea dishonest outright , but it sure seems like you're insinuating it .

Leaconsen is a much respected and knowledgeable collector of Medals and I'd take her word and opinion regarding the piece in question, for gospel. Fake is fake......

    rzrage,
Take a moment and re-read the post and quote the part where I specifically "called" Lea dishonest.

I told the seller that I had worked on the verdis gris. Actually by not sending it back as a fake, saved his reputation with EBay, which was my intention to save his reputation. My threshold came when he relisted the medal as not being a copy very soon after getting it back. My reason for placing this thread in was to warn other buyers. Maybe I should not have written dishonest, but I really thought that he understood it was a copy.

Jim there's no rage in rzage , it's a combination of r for Rusty and the phonetic spelling of my last name that begins in Zaj .
