I was able to pick up several coins on my travels to Croatia, and, of course, most were from the Siscia mint. CONSTANTIUS II AE3 OBVERSE: D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, soldier spearing fallen horseman who is wearing Phrygian helmet, reaching backwards. ASIS zigzag in ex. Struck at Siscia 351-355 AD 2.39 g, 17 mm RIC VIII 352 CONSTANTIUS II AE4 OBVERSE: CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: VICTORIAE DD AVGG Q NN, two Victories facing each other, each holding wreath & palm branch; between them: a palm branch upright, DSIS in ex. Struck at Siscia 347-348 AD 1.49 gr, 16 mm RIC VIII 194
Very nice! I really like that "pre fallen horseman" AE-4 I'll show some of my humble examples tomorrow.
Well done! I like pictures too. In fact, because of this thread I had to attempt to step up my exonumia post... Here's the only one I have a picture of right now: Constantius II, AD 337-361 AE Reduced Follis, 15mm, 1.6g, 12h; Alexandria mint, AD 340-341. Obv.: CONSTANT-IVS AVG, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev.: GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with one standard between them. Dot on banner In Ex.: SMALA Reference: RIC VIII 18 (p. 539) I don't have any Siliqua either but maybe later I can get some photos of what I do have.
Thanks guys. @randygeki What condition were those Siliquae in that coin shop in? Were they clipped or holed? Here is a nice large AE-2 of Constantius II from Constantinople. 5.2 grams
Here is a nice Constantius II AE-2 from Constantinople with a sweet black patina. I'm hoping to get it soon.
Constantius II, AD 337-361 AE 3/4, 2.41g, Antioch Mint Obv: FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev: GLOR IA EXERC ITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with one standard between them In Ex.: SMANZ Reference: RIC VII 88
Sigh...I spent what time today I could spare trying to get a half decent shot so I could contribute here...not happy with what I have.
@shernan30 I usually don't like slabbed coins but that is a nice coin! @Jwt708 I feel your pain brother! I couldn't take a decent picture to save my life! I am surprised that JA hasn't blown us away yet with his legions of Constantius LRB's
I'm here - just been very busy the last few days, and spent the entire morning in the garage replacing rotors and pads. Anyway, this thread has everything I like: a thoughtful write-up, great new coin, and pictures! Well-done sir, well-deserving of a feature. I'll go grab some Constantius II to toss in, but just a few or we'd be here all day.
I know I have shown them before too many times but I only have two. Arles (Mine has more hair than your Arles.) Thessalonica (Is that a ribbon at the bottom of the hairline?) Why did the bronzes of the day use such interesting reverses while the silver is mostly Vota? I'd love to see silver horsemen or huts.
Here is my favorite FH of Constantius II - a stylish engraving, well-struck, centered, jade-like patina. Yup, definitely my favorite FH...
Phoenix on mound - very glossy black patina on this coin, tough to image but beautiful in hand, especially in the sunlight...
The series with Spes reverse was very short-lived. Not too many halfway decent examples exist, but many very rough ones. This one is pretty good for the type...
If I had to select a favorite horseman, it woud be hard but it would not be based on grade. I am very fond of my pair from Ambianum. CSII and Gallus both show the local hairstyle.
