Just starting a "coins of the Bible" collection, and acquired this example (attached pdf) of a Tribute Penny. I would appreciate any help in attributing the coin. Any thoughts on the type or year? On the reverse, I've not seen an example showing the plant that Livia is holding. Thanks in advance for taking a look!
Hi, and welcome! I'd love to see your coin, but really don't want to open a pdf attachment to do so. If you could just attach or upload the picture as a regular .jpg file, I think you'll get more views and comments on your coin from the folks here.
I'm not aware of fine details of dating these and have never known anyone interested in them as a specialty. The distinctions are based on the style of the chair legs. The plain ones (top) are earlier and later ones (bottom) are fancier. This site recognizes six groups. I believe my two are groups one and four. I have no desire to fill out the set. These are very common and very overpriced coins available in grades from perfect to terrible but still we see more fake ones than all the other denarii combined. Post pictures in JPG format. All cameras take them. There is no reason to convert to something else.
Beautiful piece. (I opened the PDF ) May sound strange, but I like the spread on your olive branch. I haven't seen many that wide. What coins are you going to look at for your biblical collection? I try to collect examples of people mentioned or referred to. I need a tetradrachm of Ptolemy to complete my Daniel chapter 8, 4 General collection; Antigonus, Lysimachus, and Seleucus already acquired. A siglos during the reign of Xerxes (Ahasuerus) will cover the book of Esther. (good luck determining if it's really Xerxes, though.) I have 4 described as Darius-Xerxes for good measure. Though not biblical, Antiochus IV's (Epiphanes) action was alluded to in the Book of Daniel and recorded in Josephus' works, The Maccabees. I have a Tetradrachm and Drachm of Antiochus IV. A Shekel of Tyre (30 pieces of silver Judas was paid for his betrayal) is on the top of my list, but shares an inflated demand similar to an Athens Tetradrachm. A Jvdea Capta Denarius issued under Vespasian would be ideal as it was issued during the Judean revolt and coincides with Jesus' prophecy about the destruction of the Temple. Some Herodian bronze coinage would be awesome to acquire as well, although I have no interest in them. The most affordable/common is the Widow's Mite. My Tiberius examples: Ornate Plain - Michael
If you go for any Shekel of Tyre or Judaea Capta coins be very careful of your source. There are more fakes of them than there are fake Tribute Pennies. We always say to be careful of buying coins from fakesellers but the coins popular with people otherwise not interested or knowledgeable in ancients draws more fakes than most.
Well, let's go again then... ROMAN EMPIRE, TIBERIUS Denarius, RIC 26 Lyon mint, after 15-16 AD TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGUSTUS, Laureate head of Tiberius right PONTIF MAXIM, Woman seated right on a throne (Livia ?) and holding sceptre 3.71 gr Ref : RIC # 26, RCV #1763, Cohen #16 Q
Sorry about the pdf vs jpeg. First post, and wasn't sure how to insert the photo. Re-posted obverse and reverse as jpeg. (Not sure why reverse was posted multiple times.) Anyway, the reverse had me a little concerned as I'd not seen one like it (based upon on-line search for photos) with Livia holding the plant (olive branch) without leaves on it. The chair does look like it has the more ornate legs which helps to classify it. Appreciate the comments made, and any other insights that members might have on this coin. Thanks for the warnings about fakes as well. Any concerns about authenticity here?
You need a photo editor program to make a collage. I use Picasa free ware, but there are others out there.
Nice examples of the earlier and later versions. Thanks for posting photos. I reviewed the groups from forum ancient coins - maybe this coin belongs to group 3 or 4? (Wish the chair base was clearer.)
Sounds like you have a nice collection of Bible coins! I have some of the ones you mentioned, have others on my wish list, and will consider adding to my wish list the ones you mentioned from the book of Daniel. I have some of the Herod coins (the Great, Agrippa I and II, and Archelaus - would like to add Antipas - but the coins are pricey) and also several Roman Prefects/Procurators (Valerius Gratus, Festus, Felix, Marcus Ambibulus, Coponius, and Pilate). Thanks for your comment on my tribute penny. You have two very nice examples of this coin.
