He sent one in like this one and they sent it back ungraded. PCGS told him they don't grade them. He has said he has seen some of these before in PCGS holders. Anyone got any ideas about this?
So, PCGS sent it back, and he then sent it to NGC and they graded and slabbed it. Is that right? Was there a reason he wanted it in a PCGS slab? Seems like he got it graded by a top TPG, so what's the problem?
My understanding is that they were made in the 1900s decade, and there are a variety of different dies. Maybe the fact that they are backdated has something to do with it. You should ask PCGS
There are many coins, including various varieties and errors, and tokens, that PCGS will not grade - but NGC, or ANACS, or ICG - will sometimes grade. In other words, sometimes another TPG will grade them, but with some others none of the TPGs will grade them. Possible I suppose because they have been known to change their policies regarding what they will grade or not grade from time to time.
At least this was struck with dies from/by the US government. The gold tokens above were made for many decades and backdated by a variety of different people
No he sent his to PCGS and they are sending it back. The NGC coin is an example. He's going to send it to NGC once it comes back since PCGS won't grade it
And they may well grade and slab it. Or, they may not. But not because they don't grade them, but because counterfeits are way beyond common when it comes to Cal tokens. There are far more counterfeits in existence than there are genuine examples. Your friend of course may be well aware of that, and that may well be why he wants it graded to begin with.
