Hello...as I stated earlier, met with my coin friend and captured a couple MONSTER Ptolemy IV AE's. Just hefting the two in my pocket at work today was a work-load!!! Kingdom of Egypt Ptolemy IV, 221-205 AE Drachm, 37.8mm x 5.5mm thick, 42.43g Obv: Diademed head of Zeus Ammon r. Rev: Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, head right, holding cornucopiae on shoulder... LOL, ALMOST dropped this one on Blue...would have KNOCKED her OUT! If you think THAT one was a Big and Thick coin...the one coming next is a REAL GENGHIS KHAN!!! Kingdom of Egypt Ptolemy IV, 221-205 AE Drachm, 40.01mm x DUNNO thick, 69.46g Obv: Diademed head of Zeus Ammon r. Rev: Eagle standing left on thunderbolt Love the lathe dimples... AT 69g...over TWO TROY OUNCES... LOL, THIS IS A MONGO OF A COIN! I know, I know, y'all want me to free it from the plastic coffin. I will, I will. I think we should all get together and have a: "Raise the Coins from the Dead...Free them from their Coffins PARTY!" Got about a half dozen trapped that need to be freed...
I'll go as long as you provide the wine Very nice coins! I suppose that when the Egyptian slingers ran out of stones to sling at the Seleucids they could use their money!
Woooooo-hooooo => dem's some bigguns!! (congrats, Alegandalf!!) Oh, and I also have a couple of that dude's bobbles ... Ahhh, hell => I may as well unleash my whole Ptolemy-esque-ness, eh? => Shabammm!! Pt-IV Pt-IV Pt-X Pt-I Pt-V => man, they sure did love their eagles, eh?!!
OMG yes! I was always amazed with the 17g early Attica Tets... But, THESE monsters could knock out an ARMY as a sling stone!!!
@stevex6 Alegandalf!!! LOL, Lovit!!! GREAT Coins, StevieX...man, imagine all of these, just on this thread, in a coin bag! LOL, and my Ptolemy I AR Tet with them...would rip out the bottom of the bag!
I love Eagles too.. My High School mascot was the Eagles... So have that natural affinity for them on coins. I agree, The Ptolemaic Dynasty had really cool eagles!
Thank you everyone for letting me share! I was just blown away by the massive scale of these Ptolemys compared to the denarii that I collect!
Yeah, i was bowled over by the weight. I could only find one other at 75g when i did a quick search yesterday. The pic is terrible because of the box. But, the details are very crisp. I have been watching all the threads on tooling... I could not see it on either. I am going to free it.
So, what is the BEST way to free coins from slabs, without a bandsaw? And I want to keep the NGC label and number as an authenticity?
I've cracked open several slabbed coins. The first few were with a hammer. Turn the slab on its long edge and direct the blows along the seam. The junction of the label portion to the lower portion seems to be a good place. Most recently, though, I simply used a screwdriver. Wedge it in the little indentations along the edge; press and twist. Repeat at various locations. The seam will split, then wedge the screwdriver into the split; twist. A saw is unnecessary, time-consuming, and messy. The screwdriver method poses the least risk of harm, although none of the coins I freed with a hammer suffered any abrasions from the jostling. The paper label is not glued down. Just lift it off and put it in the flip.
I've posted them many times but here they are again. The virtual tray contains 40 gms less than a pound of Ptolemies. I have several more which are not in this picture, so I officially have (more than) a pound of Ptolemies Sizes range from 48 mm/91.8 gm (Ptolemy II, top right) to 20 mm/6.8 gm (top right) The largest Ptolemy with a 5 mm coin:
Wonderful Posts!!! I've been 'looking into' grabbing another myself---but with a non-eagle reverse to add to the blend.... I believe I saw one at auction recently...or was that the mixing of wine and beer?? Al, those are MONSTERS!!!.....But TIF wins the 'biggy' contest---- ? 91.8 grams and 48 mm ??? WOW!!! My two remaining examples are mere children compared to most already posted.
THAT is perfect. I have been looking at the slabs, and I was going to try that method as you described. I am glad others have proven it so I do not mess up my first de-slab process!
LOL LOL, THESE are BURGERS!!! Fat, Thick, Meaty BURGERS! From the old Burger King jingo: "It takes two hands to handle a whopper, you can get your whopper at Ptolemy King!"
