Just browsing around on Ebay and found several coins I believe to be fakes being sold by a seller out of Greece going by the Ebay name of 2014mitsotakis. Use caution and double check your possible purchases on Forgery Network or Forum's Dr. Ilya Prokopov's Fake Ancient Coin Reports.
Definitely a fakeseller, and listed on the NFSL. Unfortunately there are new ones popping up all the time and while I feel like I can generally pick out the fakes, I think eBay is the kind of place you should really just stick to established sellers.
I agree. There are plenty of new Ancients collectors on this forum and I just wanted to warn them before they think they got the buy of the century. These are fakes that look very well done. Forewarned is forearmed.
LOL, he has 965 happy buyers and only one negative that accused him of selling fakes. His ancients are so "perfect" they look like they were minted yesterday,
Having fakes in a single thread would be cumbersome. I wonder if CT's "Showcase" gallery would work? It would be best to have them in just a few "folders" though, and that means having the galleries under one person's name... and that person would have to add every coin. I volunteer if there isn't a way to make a group-editable showcase. A group-editable showcase might not be good though since the sellers of fakes could also join and remove their fakes. For something like this to work, I'd need poster of each fake to PM me with a link to the thread. I'd copy the pictures and info to the appropriate Showcase gallery, along with a link to the original thread.
I'm not very familiar with the showcase feature, but with albums you have an unlimited number of pictures and you can set the permission to custom users. I guess the problem there is the album is linked to one person.
This is actually a good point, but in reverse. I have never seen sellers of real ancients from Greece, but tons of them selling fakes. Maybe there are sellers of real coins there, but I have never seen one. To me, if the seller is from Greece, I am already alerted they most likely are fakes.
Anyone interested in educating themselves on how to spot cast fakes would do well to look at each and every one of these "coins." Notice how soft the devices are despite all the detail, the occasional casting bubbles, and the the generally dull, lifeless fabric with no metal flow lines.
Thank you everyone! Would REALLY love to have a FAKE thread or gallery set up.... I already have a FAKE RR that I will post in the gallery/thread, that was spotted on CT, and I had verified as FAKE from Andrew McCabe and David Sear, too! Sore spot for me, but an INVALUABLE lesson that this group helped me identify!!! I also learned how to research, review, and identify from the CT Group. I am still learning, and that is why I spend a lot more time LISTENING and LURKING than commenting. Ergo, others need not go through the pain...
I'm all in favor of documenting fakes, but why would we need to replicate a gallery here? There already exist huge databases at FORVM and Forgery Network. Add fakes to those.
True and I agree. However, I might suggest that when a CT member sees something as I did last night, perhaps a posting here is warranted to help newer collector's keep from buying a mistake.
