I never set out for this coin but it had low bids and after quick looking around, it's pretty scarce. Got it cheap compared to the usual rates for the type. Photo is magnified 5x from my loupe over the lens. Reverse mark isn't bad at all. Augustus, with Gaius Caesar, ( 27 B.C - 14 A.D.) Phrygia, Apamea. Gaius Masonius Rufus, Magistrate Ӕ20 O: ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ, laureate head right. R: ΓΑΙΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ ΓΑΙΟΣ ΜΑΣΩΝΙΟΣ ΡΟΥΦΟΣ ΑΠAΜΕΩΝ, Gaius Caesar in facing quadriga. 20mm 4.46g RPC 3129
Nice bronze Mat!! My examples are mostly small bronzes without portraits...and I keep getting outbid whenever I go after another type. My only portrait that is pretty decent is a denarius of Octavian and Anthony---but here's a dupondius instead:
Nice pick-up, Mat => I really like the facing quadriga reverse!! Ummm, I don't have an Augustus example, but I do have this Severus Alexander example with Sol in a facing quadriga ... Pontus Amasia, Severus Alexander, AE35 A.D. 222-235 Civic year 228 (A.D. 228/9) Diameter: 35 mm Weight: 26.18 grams Obverse: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander right, seen from behind Reverse: High altar upon which eagle stands facing, head left; above, Sol in facing quadriga, holding whip; to left of altar, tree
Wow! Like the Octavian Augustus / Gaius Iulius Nephew/Uncle Combo... VERY nice! Actually, WELL DONE, Dude!
Nice catch Mat! Any coin with a representation of Gaius Caesar is going to be rare. Here's mine... Gaius Caesar, Phyrigia, Laodikeia Æ15, 2.8g, 12h; Laodikeia, Polemon Philopatris, magistrate, AD 5. Obv.: ΓΑΙΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ; Bare head of Gaius Caesar right. Rev.: ΛΑΟΔΙΚΕΩΝ; Eagle standing right, head left, between two monograms which expand to ΠOΛE and ΦIΛOΠAT.
