    Is it that $1 pattern with a wreath around the 1 D. and a cap on the back? 1836-ish?

    Bingo @NSP It's the Judd-67 1836 $1 Gold Pattern Piece designed by Christian Gobrecht. He actually took time off from designing his Silver Dollar to do this "side project". It was based on the "cap and rays" design found on mexican coinage of the day. One really nice example is up for auction coincidentally at this week's ANA show in Chicago. I did not know this before posting, pretty cool! Here's Stack's and Bowers release on the coin in question.

    Wow, didn't even know about that one. Very cool.

    Edit: After reading up on them for a minute, this seems like one of those coins that was never supposed to leave the mint. The fact that only two examples have been found and are both in nice red condition makes me think that a mint employee got them out. Interesting piece.
