I could really use some help with this one. Stumped here. I was trying to determine what Mint that could have produced this Lifetime Issue of Alexander III, 336-323 BCE AR Tet...16.86g. Obv Herakles, Rev Zeus. 24.6mm. I KNOW that it is in a coffin, and will free it soon. I looked hard under light and lens, and angled it so that a downward Trident (or an upside down Upsilon) shown in the light. It would either be worn or a very weak strike. Or...it could be my imagination. I tried photos at different angles, but the one with the circle below was the only one that shows it. I looked up the mark, and it was the Amphipolis Mint. However, I could only find that on Gold Staters (researched under Wildwinds.) Am I imagining the mint mark? Would this be a proper mint mark for this issue? @Collect89 tried looking for a mint mark before, but my photos were poor...
The mint is gone I cant' make heads or tails of it, but you might be able to find the mint through style, it just might take ALOT of digging.
No sir, just NGC: Alexander III Tetradrachm (16.8)g Lifetime Issue obv Heracles. rv Zeus. VF Strike 5/5 Surface 3/5 I even looked up the NGC number, no further info...
Sarcastic question? NGC typically doesn't identify a mint and/or sometimes the Strategos under which the coin was minted. i.e.I have a tet minted under Pasikrates that is simply described as "Kingdom of Macedon" "In the Name of Alexander."
Yes. I know the seller, good friend, and know the person he had gotten it from...and I have purchased from him too. I going to a coin show in Statesville, NC this weekend, I will catch up to him and ask further. Thank you all for your kind help. I knew this one would be difficult, but I did not know if there would be any clues, resources, etc. that I could chase...
There are some mints with small Aramaic(?) letters in this area. I suspect this is one of those but I'm not an Alexander specialist so can't go further. This is one but not a match: http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=724492
I did see that mint mark. Whenever the Trident mark would come up, it was Amphipolis, coast of Northern Aegean Sea. However, I only found the Trident on Gold Staters... hence, my questions. I understand that a LOT of Tets were minted to finance his War Effort, especially after Issus when he started capturing the Persian treasury. Curious, did he drag around a mint with him? Or just consign the captured metals to existing mints? BTW, convinced Wife: will probably visit Fredericksburg Show per your suggestion, thank you!
Cursory glances at Aramaic and Punic alphabets: no trident characters that my dyslexic eyes could discern...
I can't help beyond doing some searches, but here is an Amphipolis tet with trident: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=106525 Good luck.
Interesting: Mine is the big ball chair, but the Trident looks the same and in the same spot...I wonder if Amphipolis struck my design also... THANKS! Good lead!
Speaking of mints. A guy at work just purchased his first ancient; although I feel I have already failed him by not being able to identify the mint. 17.17g 26.5mm
