It IS a US Coin and it is NOT an armadillo @green18 ... It is a vertebrate however, specifically an amniotic tetrapod (might be redundant, but who cares...)

edit - I'll check back in about 15-20 mins and give another photo hint if nobody has guessed correctly

 

I believe that's a croc. Armadillos have 3 toes.

 

All i was doing was reading the posts then i saw this picture and i know ive seen that croc/armadillo leg somewhere..... now im flipping through the red book like an idiot

So it's an alligator. The coin itself has different reverses each year but only on the proof version of the platinum eagles (I didn't know that). Pretty cool imo. Some more info on the coin in question here
