Mint direct to graders

About a year or so ago, direct shipping of mint coins to PCGS and NGC were being discussed as an option for coin collectors. Was this ever completed, rejected or is it still a work (Hope) in progress?

Don't recall ever hearing anything like that. Nor can I see how it could ever be a viable option since it would require the mint to pay NGC/PCGS for grading the coins, and that would have to be authorized by law before it could ever happen.

So I'd have to say, not ever gonna happen.

I think you can send your coins to PCGS/ NGC directly from the mint. Though I am not sure how the grading submission would work. You could probably do an electronic submission form to do it. That way the coins can go into the system as soon as they arrive.

    How?

Let's assume that 1,000 proof sets are shipped to NGC in 1,000 separate orders on the same date. NGC receives all 1,000 orders on the same date. How would NGC be able to identify which set belonged to which submitter? Let's take it a step further and assume that 500 sets ended up being graded PF70UCAM and the other 500 sets received PF69UCAM. I could imagine having 500 submitters claiming that they were shipped the wrong set.

I really don't see how it could work!

    How?

You order a set from the mint, have it shipped in your name to the grader's address instead of your address.

This could only work IF the submitter were a PCGS Authorized Dealer AND that dealer made prearrangements with PCGS to keep an eye out for the package.

I just do not see this happening since there are sooooo many variables which are not addressed when the package is received and opened.

Should be easy, in my estimation (other than the fact that the U.S. Mint is part of the equation ;) ).

    Yeah, that's a great idea!

Slick Steve who has an account with NGC places an order with the Mint using the credit card of Dumb Dennis who is registered with the Mint. How is Empty-headed Ernie who works for the Mint supposed to know if the address is legit or not? So, when Slick Steve's order is received and processed by NGC, he uses his own credit card for payment to avoid raising any red flags.

This is just one scenario where the Mint and some other account holder can be duped. Is it really worth it for the Mint to use this "direct ship" process?

    How dumb was she?
Dora was so dumb that she once ordered a BLANK from the U.S. Mint.

Easy enough for the Mint and NGC or PCGS to work out a protocol. Many entities (including government entities) have shown capability to directly send and receive info/shipments on behalf of a client.

I apply for a engineering license with the state and they request that my school transcript be directly sent to them. They are expecting it and NCEES sends it at my request. I pay the state and NCEES. It's a mutually agreed upon relationship. Not too difficult.

But, let's suppose that Nefarious Nick requests the transcripts and arranges it with NCEES under the guise of being Bungling Billy?

You have to remember that there are thousands and thousands of people who would prefer to spend all day, 24/7, thinking of ways to make money and avoid legitimate work.

Wouldn't you want to inspect the coins to see if they were worth grading? I know it's different for those who want the first strike labels, but otherwise it seems foolish to blindly send in coins and pay a fee that could easily be more than the coin is worth.

Dumb Dora was sooooooo dumb that when she got a blank planchet in her proof set from the mint she returned it asking for a replacement.

The mint has your credit card information. They simply forward it to the grading company. Your requesting it so they have your approval and you pay for it. Your just speculating. No different then buying a sealed mint box on eBay. You do this on limited edition coins, not general coinage.

You seem to forget that Slick Steve is soooooo slick that........

    How slick is he!

He was able to get Bungling Billy's credit card info and use it with his own name.

Limited Edition Coins! General Coinage! How many different scenarios do you think that Mint employee Empty-headed Ernie is capable of remembering?

You and I can separate the two. What is their problem? Other than a Bert and Ernie scenario which are not human beings. Now if slick Steve got by the Federal Government, (The Mint) he could do this later without direct shipment. The high probability always exists. Even in the initial purchase. Should we stop buying any service out of fear?

I would agree with you on most government policy. But filing my income tax is a two fold problem as apposed to forwarding a request. What could be simpler? Maybe I mis-understood your reply?
