This one is quite a rare one. I recognize this particular spec, you bought it from Victor's Imperials on Vcoins, didn't you
http://www.catbikes.ch/helvetica/feltemps.htm The above link shows Danes personal collection of horsemen grouped by mint. Don't mention the low grade of some of the coins unless you have as many all better. Last I checked she has a bit over 700 so she is 1/3 of the way to the set. Scarry.
Yes. Every time I look through it, I remind myself I need to go through the whole thing and give all the varieties a good study. Maybe when the kids move out and I retire...
I too am in awe of Dane's collection. As a novice interested in this time period and the Fel Temp series I consider this collection and Doug's work vital references for understanding these coins. It is now bookmarked on this tablet. Thank you Dane and Doug!
This is Antioch first officina (A). The gamma in the field is a mark of the weight series. There was one series of smaller size coins from Thessalonika with officinae in field but other horsemen placed the officinae in exergue. I show the gamma=3 and delta=4 versions below but they come in A-E. In that one case the gamma does mean shop three.
After a year or more in olive oil, a cup on my window seal. i pulled these two out one cleaned up ok, the other needs to go back for another year!! Love the green patina, 18mm x 2.36g. unclear mint HSIEH or N?? This one was in olive oil for over a year, needs to go back... does have signs of that dark green patina!!
Also got this out of the same unclean lot(200 Roman coins) i bought a couple years ago. Constantius ll..337-361 AD. Centenionalis Victory. 24mmx 4.98g. Dot BSIS star.
She looks like a Bond girl ... or perhaps an evil Bond chick (either way, very cool) However, I'm pretty sure that Money-Penny would not approve!!
I don't have many FEL TEMP - Fallen horseman and they are largely something I pass by without paying them any attention. I was buying a couple of coins this week and this one was in the mix. It was thrown in for what would be less than $5 as part of the lot I was buying so I had to take it. I seemed to recall that the Rome mint version are slightly scarcer than others. I could get quite into these but I already have enough collecting distractions..... Constantius II - AE3 Obv:– D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, Pearl diademed, laureate draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:– FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Soldier spearing falling enemy horseman, soldier is bare headed, reaching towards the horseman Minted in Rome (//R DOT M DOT Q). I seem to be accumulating these FEL TEMPs all of a sudden....
