Hello I'm very new to collecting coins and I'd like an opinion on one of the pennies I just found. Below the date it appears to have another very faint date. I don't think it is a doubled die because it only occurs right there. Please let me know what you think of it, thanks!
i had something similar to yours it was plating issue judging from the line coming down next to date it looks like plating issue,,,try to get a better closeup pic,,that's just my opinion ......
Looks like popped plating blisters, one outside the D and one inside. I'll let the experts weigh in tho.
I think so, I see it all around the date. It is odd, tho, how the whole thing looks doubled, the date and mint mark, all in the same general direction. I've checked the big 4 recourses I know of (cherypicker's guide is at home, not with me at the lake right now) varietyvista.com lincolncentresource.com doubleddie.com and Ken Potter's page http://koinpro.tripod.com/ErrorVarietyList.htm I don't see listings for a 1990 D bouled die obverse like this. That doesn't mean it's a dead end, hopefully someone here has seen this plating blister doubling effect before and weigh in.
See post #5 above. Unlike MD (machine doubling / damage) which can go in any direction, die deterioration doubling effect tends to flow towards the rim.
