I finally own a gold coin. It's another milestone in my collection. VALENS AV Solidus OBVERSE: DN VALENS PER F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: RESTITVTOR REIPUBLICAE, Valens standing right, holding labarum in right hand & Victory on globe in left, cross to left. Mintmark star ANTE star Struck at Antioch, 364 AD 3.6g, 19mm Antioch RIC 2d,xxxvii-5 Flavius Julius Valens Augustus, Eastern Roman Emperor from 364 to 378. Given the eastern half of the empire by his brother Valentinian I after the latter's accession to the throne. Valens, sometimes known as the Last True Roman, was defeated and killed in the Battle of Adrianople, which marked the beginning of the collapse of the decaying Western Roman Empire. It's not certain how Valens met his end. "Some have asserted that he was burnt to death in a village where he had retired, which the barbarians assaulted and set on fire. But others affirm that having put off his imperial robe he ran into the midst of the main body of infantry; and that when the cavalry revolted and refused to engage, the infantry were surrounded by the barbarians, and completely destroyed in a body. Among these it is said the Emperor fell, but could not be distinguished, in consequence of his not having on his imperial habit." As always, post any of your coins that might even be remotely associated.
DA BING GOTS DA BLING!! I am very jealous of you because I know what you paid for that coin. What's next amigo? Stealing candy from children? Pencils from the blind?
Very nice and congratulations on adding goals to the collection. I didn't know about the mystery surrounding how he met his end.
Ironically the Western Roman Army was largely spared from the disaster( thanks in part to the able Generals left by Valentinian I) Funny how the Eastern army was nearly annihilated and yet the Western Empire fell? No, the death blow to the Western Roman army was the back to back civil wars against a "revived" Eastern Roman army at the end of the century. The Battle of the Save and Frigidus River were particularly bloody! Valens AR Argenteus 2.74 grams The Dux Secundae of Moesia who survived Adrianople. Magnus Maximus AR Siliquae Hats off to a fine coin, Bing! Cheers!!!!!

Gorgeous coin!!! Congrats Bing, you beat me my a mile....my gold coin is still out there taunting me LOL No golden solidus or argenteus...just a tiny Byzantine tremisses..... Hmmmm, care to share in your good fortune and tell us the seller
NO! Sorry to say, this particular seller is no longer dealing in Ancients. He consigned all his ancients (not sure where, but I can ask) except three gold Aurei he kept for himself. Then, he offered this one to me at a price I could not refuse just for being a good customer (I probably bought 20 coins from him in the past year or so). BTW, he now deals exclusively in Asian coins with an emphasis on Vietnamese Cash coins (I think).
