Wow you guys are SO lucky!

I got a box of halves from my bank today - no silver, no NIFCs, no proofs, no 87s. Big ol' skunker. I did pull the shiny coins so I can maybe upgrade some of the coins in my book. Surprisingly, there were only four 76 coins. My last box was half 76s. Weird.

But... I did buy a coin at the grocery store today. My first dollar proof! :)

Christobal---I assume there will be no silver in my half boxes, so I look to upgrade my set. Then, when I find something with silver in it I let out a "Ding" and my wife knows I found something. Kind of unusual to not have any NIFC's or proofs. My dominant year is usually 1971. It's also a little rare to find a Philadelphia coin in excellent condition (I'm in Seattle). Denver is super-abundant.

    Hi Lincoln,

Yeah 71 and 74 are really, really common for me too, but my previous box was literally half 76s. Crazy.

Seeing as how I'm in the Boston area, Philedelphia coins are easiest for me. We should consider an upgrade swap. :)

Now all we need is a pal in San Fran... Heh.

Halves seem to be so random, they either are skunks that someone else searched or they pay off big and is a bag from the wild that naturally filled at the bank for the whole year. I seem to either get nothing or 6+ silver out of boxes, a pair of boxes for some reason has never skunked me before, there normally seems to be something in one of the 2 then nothing in the other. This morning i got half a bag of dimes from a new bank i just started to get stuff from, first dimes from them, got 4 silver Roosevelts in it, not bad for a bag of $500.

My record is 11 consecutive boxes of halves with no silver. I seriously considered finding a new way to waste time. But...I pressed on.

It's not a proof. Those are made at the San Fran mint. It would have an S instead of a P mintmark.

Went to the bank for anything really. No halves but they had 2 large dollars (1972 and 1976). That made up for them not having a box of pennies... i guess

Probably not a keeper in my book, but it's not bad for a 92-P. I find a lot of poorly stuck 90s Kennedys - anyone else notice this?

I've been looking through a lot of boxes the last week and have begun to keep coins that are AU like the 1992P in your photographs. I've found very few true collectables, as in 4 coins out of 20,000...dismal. I figure I may as well set aside some AUs so I can eventually put together a complete JFK set from circulation...makes looking through boxes more enjoyable.

That's a nice looking half Dan! Don't get discouraged. My whole collection is solely circulated coins, so I appreciate finding a nearly perfect coin. :)

Take this 1941-D nickel I found last night. It's dirty, but sharp! Full stairs, lots of hair, nice coin. Better than the one in my book by at least two grades! Keeps me looking.

Put the new Wilco album on repeat, and went through a box of cents.

    Wheats: 25 - 1 dateless, 1937, 1939 (x3), 1940, 1941, 1942, 1944, 1944-D (x2), 1945, 1945-D, 1946, 1947 (x2), 1951, 1952, 1953, 1953-D, 1955, 1956-D, 1957-D (x2), 1958-D
Copper: didn't keep count, but I'd call it average.
    S mints: 1969, 1971
    2009: 4
    Canada: 13 (oldest 1957)

    curiosities:
This 1945-D - judging by the wear on this one, I'm going to say plated? A little too shiny to just be cleaned.

This very worn wheat that looks like it might've spent some time at the bottom of a lake. 192...? Probably not worth anything unless that last digit is a "2"

    A BU 1959, and a heavily worn 196...? - never seen a post-1940 coin this worn out.

My take from this past week:
    - $25 CWR cents: 5 run of the mill wheats and 498 coppers
    - $80 CWR nickels: 15 pre-1960 keepers, and 2 war nickels (43-P x2)

I'll make the rounds later this morning and reload for this week's search.

Poor showing for me this week. Been through a box of CWR pennies, a box and a half of CWR dimes, $250 in CWR quarters. No silver.

    (3) 1938-P, (3) 1939-P nickels, all worn nearly flat. Actually there was a 4th 39, but it had a hole through it, so I tossed it back. A few other 40s nickels only one of which may be good enough to swap with my book (stained 1946).

    (2) 2009-P, 2009-D dimes and a nice looking 1967, and 1984-D.

Some shiny new park quarters. Everything else was rashy.

Found 4 or 5 common wheatbacks. 1937 & 1939 being the oldest. All worn.

    <shrugs>

Just got a fresh box of BWR nickels and some 10 or so rolls of CWR quarters and dimes. Hopefully better luck in this batch. :)

Gave up on Halfs after 2 boxes and "no" silver. Besides they are heavy.
However, might just go back to Franklins and Kennidys in a few months to check for varieties.
Have have reasonable results with cents, both from the Bank and from bulk buys on Ebay.

Jack, I'd encourage you to give halves more time. I've had as many as 10 boxes in a row with no silver, and then "Pow!" a really good box yields 10 or 15 40% and/or 90% halves. It's not consistant, but the averages over time are worth my efforts.

    Bank 1: $5 loose halves - 2 40% (1967)

Bank 2: $1.50 loose halves - all 3 were 40%! Best part was they weren't even in the teller tray - the loan officer overhead my request and pulled a few out of her own wallet.

    Bank 3: $10 CWR - solid 1971
