Excuse my ignorance, I have a question about the above cent. How do you or PCGS know that this coin was NOT baked in an oven to get the colors?? Thank you, Gary
Robec junior, was this coin baked in an oven to achieve its colors? If not, how do you know?? Thank you for responding, I would like to know.
Obviously I don't know what the exact method or cause of the toning. I would assume baking in the oven would leave both sides with similar results, which isn't the case with either coin. I have seen enough toners to know these are both MA and more importantly I like them.
Thank you for responding, I hardly had a chance to get the 'corn outta the micro. However, personal likes are important, I agree!! But I have seen US cents exploited because they had some colors in them, exploited in that the normal selling prices could increase by 10x. I have seen coins dipped in an acidic solution, then quickly dipped in an alkaline solution (baking soda, or potassium monopersulfate) and the results were spectacular and unpredictable. And the sides of the coin in no way were similar. A handful of 1950's cents could generate hundreds of dollars for the manipulators. (Do note, in that the SOME of the circular "rainbow" effects seem to be more often genuine, again this is my personal experience). I think the rainbow effect can be recreated by wise manipulators, but it is difficult to ascertain!! I guess it is "to each his own". Again thank you for replying, I liked your reply, it is the only one which justifies the practice of this type of coin alternation.
It is for sure you have to go into this with your eyes open. For years we have been asking those who know about coin doctoring to show examples of color manipulated coins that have been recreated to mimic naturally toned examples. So far none have been produced in any thread I have visited, only people that talk of what they have seen. If you have proven doctored coins I would love to see them. I am here to learn as much as anyone else. I'm not sure exactly how many toned coins I have off hand, all but a handful were purchased that way. 99% of those have been blessed by either PCGS or NGC. Many I bought raw and submitted to either of the two TPG's with success 99% of the time. I understand that being blessed by PCGS or NGC doesn't necessarily mean the color is natural, but it does lead one to believe they are at least Market Acceptable.
I do not alter coins to sell, I do experiment. Thus my results displayed below are not as good as someone who knows what they are doing. A pro knows just the right temperature and time, or the right acid level. I do not so the images displayed show my quick (in 10 minutes) amateur results. I do not think any collector would mistake any of these as authentic unaltered coins. In this case, you stand correct, and I failed to produce a nice artificially toned coin. (Though quite by accident I have produced a few which were pretty good!).
Under different light some of these same coins can appear quite different!! Another trick used by some folks (control of reflective lighting). Sorry for the poor focus I had to move the camera off the tripod. Well, hey y'all, I did try, given some time I could really surprise even myself.
Thanks for showing your results. I can definitely see changes in the coin's appearance. For the most part I think I've done a good job steering clear of this type "toning".
Got this For $6, it looked XF to AU in the photos so I took a cheap gamble and hoped to get an upgrade (I have an XF right now). Coin was way better than photos. Lots of luster. Almost all the detail was still there. I'm happy
Purchased my first coin since 2002. Not sure if I paid too much just yet ($205), but I really liked the look. I'm still trying to figure out what type of set I'm going to work on. I was initially interested in the early coppers, but after seeing a bunch today I don't think that is the set for me. The Capped Bust 1/2 dimes are on the short list since its a rather small set and can be affordable on an average budget. I'm also thinking about a high grade type set with this Standing Liberty being my first piece. The smaller silver/nickel pieces have me most interested. Anything 25 cents or smaller. I'm interested in hearing want everyone thinks about the coin.
Okay, I don't know if this qualifies . . . I took a coin on consignment today, which technically is not an acquisition. I just shot photos of this beauty . . . anyone want to drool? It's an R3 O-108, and could well be the best looking one available.
