How is 17k rare? If you go on eBay and there is more than 10 of something listed at any given time it's not rare regardless of the price or mintage.
Prices for raw sets are up on eBay, and there are a lot of them for sale. Looks like people may be paying a premium to get the Truman RP coin graded in hopes of a 70.
That seems a bit silly. All of the Truman RPs have been put on the market in the last week or so. Of course there are a lot of them on eBay.
I said "something" meaning anything in the context I wrote it. I stand by that, at any given time you can see 10 listings of the exact same thing (collectable) listed on eBay its not rare......it might be highly desired or expensive, but isn't rare.
So are you saying in a year from now I won't be able to find 10 of these coins on any given day on eBay?....Rare things have small populations and RARELY come to market, not something you can find in 30 seconds on eBay and own multiples of with a few clicks.
Let's look at Franklin Mint, lots of their things have populations of 2500, yet you wouldn't call any of that stuff rare. If an artist painted 10,000 different paintings the market would be considered extremely saturated with his/her work....A lithograph from a famous artist with a population of 1000 would not be rare at all and you might not be able to find a single one on the market for weeks, months or even years.
True because big sales on one always pushes the interest up in getting another. Today, a short 14 days after the coin was even offered for sale, there are 3 graded at PR70. But over the next 2 weeks, that number could go up. Significantly. Which is also a historical fact.
I just sold 5 opened sets for $850! This is getting crazy. I really want to keep a few, but at these prices, why not sell? Also, if opened sets are selling this well, why not open them and look for 70's before selling?
Contained within the proof set is one 2012-S Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle and one 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle. Collectors thought both coins were exclusive to the set. Many of them became disenchanted when learning later that another product, the Making American History Coin and Currency Set, would also include the 2012-S Proof. An angry call went out to cancel proof set orders. Some collectors did… and the U.S. Mint was jabbed in the eye. The 26,321 drop translates to a U.S. Mint revenue loss of more than $3.94 million. http://www.coinnews.net/2012/12/07/final-2012-s-american-silver-eagle-two-coin-proof-set-sales/
You're comparing apple & oranges. 17k for a modern U.S. Coin is rare or extremely scarce. In a year or two you won't see 10 of these on eBay and the price could be through the roof.
