I think I know what you mean, about the obverse anyway. It looks like she got cut off at the knees, man! Wouldn't it be nicer if she were wearing Roman cross-thonged sandals, walking in profile to the left with that flag (fluttering) around her, a rising sun in the background, a bundle of oak and laurel branches in the crook of her left arm, while she points into the sky with the right? Oh, has that been done before?
I like the reverse, but the obverse could sure use an artists touch. Seems stale and made by a boardroom.
Liberty looks petulant and bulimic and the eagle is superfluously detailed. Looks like scales rather than feathers. Of course the actual coin may look better than this rendering.
I'll accept it as a step in the right direction . . . at least it's an improvement over the mint products of recent decades . . . here's hoping the improvements keep coming.
The intricate detail isn't present. So much for lazier engraving. Faster and cheaper overrides beauty and design.
The obverse reminds me of a "starlet" posing on the red carpet at a movie premier. The reverse looks more like a hawk or falcon than a bald eagle.
"IF" I had the money, I'd buy it because I think the design is a winner. However, I normally do not do gold and as such, haven't even considered purchasing one.
At first glance I was saying what the ?, because I usually don't care for modern design. But then I actually started looking at it closely. The detail of the head, especially the face is amazing, in high relief that's going to be quite stunning I think. As is the detail of the upper portion of the drapery. The rest of the obv lacks any fine detail, but even that aspect appeals to me. The rev, you can't see the fine detail of the feathers unless you use the magnified pics on the mint's web site, but it is there. They missed putting any detail on the 3 or 4 feathers coming off the eagle's back, but perhaps that is just due to the pic angle and glare. Other than that, I like the rev too. Were I still collecting coins, I'd be buying one
I dont collect modern stuff, but I follow it on http://mintnewsblog.com/. I like this design plenty, when I first saw it, and also from this thread on CT. Compared to what I normally see for modern US coins, this one is a beauty to me! I'm surprised by the negative comments. Everyone has a different idea of what it pleasing for a coin design, but I would think superior designs tend to win the majority over. Even when a particular proposed Obv or Rev is a clear fan favorite, the US Mint will often choose a lesser design simply for manufacturing reasons, or maybe because they're dummies, but for me, this is one of the few good designs recently that has made it through the committees and been selected. I wish I had the money for a gold coin, or a modern coin!
