I have two lights, but usually only use one or the other.

I just came across this coin that I haven't looked at in quite some time. And, I don't remember the reverse being so fine and detailed. This is an interesting coin in that it is an ancient muling of an obverse of Philip with a reverse of Gordian III.

What if you made the light angle the same in the reshoot as it is in the original...I think you might have a better photo on your hands. I would also fix the orientation of the reverse so that the floor is perpendicular to the bottom of the photo. This is nice but I know how you want perfection, this coin is worth extra attention.

I'll try again tomorrow, but I didn't want the light from behind the head as it seems to lose some of the facial features of Hercules. But I will see what I can do. Tomorrow. Right now it's bed time for Bonzo.

Sorry Bing. It's the annoying Welshman here again. Your Philip - Hercules is a wrong un.

    It is a modern concoction.

Here is another matching one (there are more) - I added this to the Forum Fakes db this one back in 2008:-

The same obverse die then muled with another reverse:-

And here is the reverse die on a quite convincing Gordian III ant. Sold as a struck replica by Remoneda in August 2010

Hey Martin, you are the annoying Welshman aren't you? It's good to have someone around to keep things honest. Thanks for always keeping an eye out for us dumb sh--.

On this particular coin, I posted it over at Forum when I first purchased it (my records are unclear on when that was but probably 2010-2011 time frame). The consensus was that it was most probably an ancient muling. I remember making the statement then that this was a fake. A. Reich responded that it was most probably ancient. I do not recall who responded in that thread except for A. Reich.

I have all this annotated in my catalog, so it was always left with that question mark. Perhaps things have changed since that posting and the examples you show seem to indicate there have been more to show up.

Thanks again. Keep it up you, the most annoying of Welshmen. It's good to know someone is watching out for the rest of us.

BTW, my wife and I visited Chester last year. We had a great time even with all them "annoying Welshmen".

I lived in the Cardiff area (Llanbdr-y-Fro, Or Peterson-Super-Ely) for three years...in the Hedgerows and on a working farm. Expated for a company in Bridgend. Loved Wales! And the Welsh people are wonderful! Would live there again! Was even made an "Honorary" Welshman at one of our drunken Xmas parties! I also had the oppotunity to visit Isca (Caerleon) Roman Legionary Fort...even slipped away with a couple Roman cement chips from the foundation...cherish them today! :) If you want them back, Molon Labe! :) :) :)

I live 20 minutes from Isca (Caerleon) and am 10 minutes from Venta Silurum (Caerwent). I was born in Maridvnvm (Carmarthen) the westermost Roman outpost in Britain.

    Bing,
I posted in your thread on this coin on Forvm back in 2011.

Yes, I remember that thread now. But there was another before that one where I lamented about it being another fake. A Reich said that it was not definitely a modern fake. Anyways, I think the jury is back with a verdict of modern fake. I have now made reference to that fact in my catalog. Thanks.

Wow, been to all those towns! I was about 30-40 mins from Isca. We lived straight west of Cardiff. Used to go to Hillary, and lunch at the Bush...wonderful pub

No you don't. My images seem to bring out detail which keep coins from selling since they look worse than in hand. Of course my images were made to illustrate my website for educational purposes not hiding defects. Your recent images look great to me. I have been using that ring light too much lately and ruining more images than it helped. I wish I could get back to where I was two years ago. Someone suggested that I would do better using natural daylight so I decided to give it a try. This was taken on my back deck. I must admit that the coin looks good but there was a downside that might keep me from becoming a regular outside coin shooter.

Great Crested Flycatchers are known to incorporate foreign objects in their nests. Usually this means snake sheds.

All of my coins look far better in hand. I finally realized why: my near vision has deteriorated :(.
