Help save my 1934 Texas Centennial Half Dollar...!

Is there any way of stopping the PVC attack on my coin, with out removing the patina/toning on the coin?




I'm not trying to clean the coin, just stop the PVC.

Acetone?

I work in a Chemical Lab, so i can get the cleanest/purest Acetone i think is out there.

I was just worried about removing to much.?

So, maybe a quick dip to stop it..?

Acetone is the way to go and you shouldn't hurt a thing. I've heard tell that you can soak it for long periods without negative affects.

I will get some better before/after pics, and how long i soaked it for, and post back just to show.

Acetone won't react with silver, won't remove the toning but will remove foreign material, just don't put copper in it unless you like pink cents

 

Acetone is the best and a quick dip will not work. I would suggest dipping for a few hours, rinse and dip again if necessary to remove all evidence of PVC.

 

"Dip' is an Acidic measure....one that is going to remove metal from the coin. Acetone will in no way remove the metal. Like 'Jester stated above, the impurities will be removed. Hoping the best for you OP.......

 

I hope the PVC didn't damage the coins surface yet as it's a beautiful coin .

 

I had a 1913-S Type I Buffalo that I bought back in 2003 from an east coast Coin Dealer from an ad in a coin magazine. It had been in a soft (PVC) plastic flip in the original mailing envelope for 12 years in desk drawer. When I found it last year, it had some of the green stuff on it. I soaked it several times in pure acetone over a 2 week period. Submitted to NGC last May, 2014. It came back graded AU-53. NOT a Details slab.

Yes, as for as i know Acetone is pretty much an inert chemical. We use it to flush/clean are GC(Gas chromatography) machines, and when we test for AO(Antioxidants) as the carrier agent. Also to clean SV(Solution Viscosity) equipment.

Yea, that is my intention to get it slabbed.Of course i hope it grades well, but mainly interested in preserving it. I'm not going to lie, I have literally tried to figure out how to get it graded for a few years, still unsure of myself on how to fill out the paper work correct, and not make a mistake.

They do not make it user friendly..

 

Nice coin. Hope the acetone bath works for you. I live in Texas and I still don't have one of these. I need to remedy that and quick!

 

Thats what I was thinking, if its ( PVC ) have eaten into the coin, I would think you would have pitting when its removed ( PVC ) ...

Honestly, it looks like it hasn't altered the surface yet, I can not see any pitting at all, look's like a green haze, even though it's hard to tell in the picture..
