I have just started picking up Ikes here - like them. A good weight in the hand and back in the day, it must have felt like you had money. So far just the three, a 1971 - D, 1972 - D, 1976 - D. Unfortunately no toning and I suspect cleaned and showing signs of circulation. eBay is likely the only place to pick them up in UK - but is there anything I should really be looking for? I know there were some silver years....!
Tulipone- keep your eyes peeled for the '71d FEV and the '72p type 2! Ive cherried both for next to nothing... if you dont know.what those are visit the ike group online, id post the link but i have no clue how to do it... both.coins.can be worth over $500 depending grade and who knows, you might trip over 1... cool to talk to someone across the.pond!!
So..... noone else has any toned ikes??? I guess they are pretty rare... i thought we would see atleast a few nice brown boxes in this thread... huh
That 74-S is actually pearlescent which is the only reason I had it graded. If folks are looking for toners, the 1974-S Silver Proof coins is what should researched as some amazing toners exist. Possibly the final rinse the mint used combined with the packaging or maybe an improper storage prior to shipping. Regardless, there are some sweet ones out there.
Holy...... Guacamole!! So YOU r the guy hoarding all the nice ikes... Great way to spark a thread... you put the jumper cables on this one my friend!!
I'm hoping a slight off topic as these are not toned - I have just fallen across two San Francisco proof sets 1973 and 1977 that are in sealed black plastic cases with a red inlay. There is no toning at all - the sets are 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c, and Ike Dollar coins. From some quick research the 1973 Ike could be silver. Is that right?
Correct. The only "silver" IKE's were those produced specifically for collectors as single coin offerings from the US Mint. The 1973-S Proof coin, in a brown wood grained box, and the 1973-S Uncirculated version which came in cello packaging within a blue envelope. On rare occasions, a CnClad planchet made it into the uncirculated S Mint coin presses which makes for a great modern off-metal rarity.
Here's one I just got back from NGC. I knew it wouldn't grade high but I did like the tone when I picked it from a dealer for not much over face.
Guilty... I have been hoarding toned Ikes for a long time. I sold all the silver Ikes as I am partial to the high grade, clad, album toned ones. Here are a few examples. Couple of silver's I sold to a CT member.
