1803 1$ NGC45 Does dark tone add originality, subtract value, or both?

@Luckydas , so is that not wear on the nose, forehead, cheek/chin, hair, ribbon, dress shoulder? Is that all due to a weak strike? If so, than my grade is clearly wrong. But all those areas failed to tone, so I'm thinking its some wear.

If you like the coin, than please, purchase it. You asked for comments and I'm sharing mine.

I really don't like blast white coins , especially since I collect mostly Bust halves , that said I rather have a slightly lighter coin than this . Would I buy it , probably not unless it was a coin I've been looking for for a long while . But that's just a personal preference . I'll pay a premium for a nice original skinned coin , a nice grey with highlights of other colors . Again my preference .

As for where I shop it could be anywhere as I think this coin is already discounted as to the grade it received . I think this is an AU coin but I figured the tpgs and even more so PCGS would lower the grade . So there's the discount in my opinion . I wonder what it would have graded if indeed a more normal grey color .

Just stirring the pot, jp; thank you for your insight.

Those areas do seem slightly worn, but those are the high points, and all bust dollars show wear there, unless they are full Mint State. The consensus seems to be that this sort of toning brings the coin down a full grade from its technical grade.

Is this a coin you own or is this posted just for conjecture?

It looks like wear to me.

It is a coin that I have been considering purchasing for several months now.
I have been waiting, studying, enjoying learning more, before deciding to purchase.

Of course you are right; it absolutely is wear, and I never intended to suggest anything different. I only meant that it is very little wear, and not enough to account
for the relatively low grade awarded by NGC. I started this thread in order to explore the role played by dark toning in grading and valuing this series of coins.
I have learned a lot from everyone's opinions.

I like this one, too. It's starting to get a bit dark for my tastes, but I certainly would love to own it if I were in the market for an early dollar.

No worries. IMO, an evenly dark toned early 19th century coin can be quite attractive. I think the toning/patina, whatever you want to call it, on both the 1801 and 1803 you posted are nice. But if I were to pick between them, I'd take the 1801.

If you think that coin has wear, which I do as well, than it can't be anything more than XF something. It looks to have a nice strike, with a lot of great detail. Now the only question left to answer is: Do you like it enough to have it in your collection?

I agree with XF45. Too much wear for an AU.

Well, they are about the same price; the 1803 being offered for $4650, and the 1801 for $4550. You would still prefer the 1801, jp?

I had to go back an look at the 1801 again. I still prefer the 1801.

Look for the most coin for your buck. Look to Heritage and Stacks-Bowers archives to help establish a pricing base line.

Stunning toning, I am an major fan of the dark and gunmetal tones- perfectly natural. That is one gorgeous coin. So many people here in the UK prefer the shiny examples that there is a dipping craze, something I will never hope to understand. I try to rescue as many as possible, but I am only one man....
