I was surfing through eBay a few weeks ago and discovered this coin, supposedly made of .999 silver. It's not particularly large, the diameter is approximately 32mm, and it weighs about 14.7g. I tested it to the best of my ability, and from what I can tell, it is actually silver. I got it for spot price, but am curious to find out what it is, or where it came from. Thanks in advance. (please tell me it's rare [emoji14])
The one side looks very much like a Kutch, but the other is really throwing me off. I'm wondering if it's just a remake of one...
It definitely looks like India, but I couldn't find it in the 1901-2000 or the 2001-2012 world catalogs that I have. My guess is it's some sort of token, probably aluminum?
It feels quite hefty for just aluminum though, and all of the magnet tests I have done seem exactly like other silver coins that I have. The 32mm diameter, .937-999 purity, 14.5ish gram weight and the look of it really make it seem like an authentic coin.
Looks like a silver art round rather than an official coin. Do a Google images search for Hindu silver art coin and you will see other such items.
What? Can you explain your magnet test. Aluminum and silver are both non-magnetic... or is that what you meant, that it does not stick to a magnet?
The magnet tests that I usually run involve something like the magnet slide test. The magnets don't "stick" to silver coins, but that only proves that the coin isn't made of a material like steel. Because silver has diamagnetic properties while exposed to a strong magnetic field, there is some resistance. Aluminum, copper, and other metals behave differently under the same field, and that's why silver is usually fairly simple to test. Definitely not a coin. I don't think there are any numbers on it, and it just doesn't look like a coin. Coins are usually not .999 silver either. Temple token or just some random medal or bullion piece I'd say.
