That IS a nice looking coin. The reference is RIC 62
NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS, laureate head right / VESTA, hexastyle temple of Vesta with domed roof & statue of Vesta within

You are the experts, and if it's not "provincial" I believe you! :) But then, if it was minted in Gaul and not in Rome, wouldn't that be considered a province? The other interesting thing about this one is the bust facing left (?).
IdesOf March, sorry, it's not the picture; unfortunately the reverse is too worn out to see those details.

IoM is correct. We need more info to make any real determination.

Not necessarily. A sharper reverse picture with better lighting would go a long way toward eliminating those reverses that it cannot possibly be, thus narrowing down the list of candidates.

The obverse picture is sufficient to glean all the essential details other than the presence or absence of a wreath on Nero's head, but even so, a sharper obverse picture would be helpful as well in helping determine the presence of a wreath.

You might want to browse any or all of the other threads on this site to see examples of worn coins that nonetheless have sharp pictures revealing more detail than you might have thought possible.

That's exactly what I was about to write. I believe this is RIC 412 Nero:

Obverse: NERO CLAVD CAESAR AVG GER P M TR P IMP P P Laureate head left.

Reverse: VICTORIA AVGVSTI S C Victory walking left, wreath in right and palm in left.

    Dupondius, Lugdunum mint.

Very nice Nero coins! We should have a thread for coins from Caligula?!

I'm not an expert on forgeries of any coin type, but something about that Nero denarius seems 'off' to me.....It's a popular type with the Vesta temple and can be quite pricey in higher grades/condition---which always makes me wary.

Looking at acsearch, I see numerous examples ranging from just about $100 to well in the four figures, and all seem to vary just a bit in overall 'style'.

Yours seems to have a lettering unlike any of those I viewed and your temple dome is far less rounded than any of those I examined...So, I'm naturally questioning whether it is a replica/fake and not the genuine coin we hope it to be...

Hopefully, the more astute and knowledgeable among us can clarify the genuineness or lack of it better than I can......

I thought there is something off as well. The temple does not look right. I looked at several, but none looked like this coin.

[IMG] indeed temple roof dont look right, and vesta letters to. there is something
very strange on that coin. i miss details in that coin> roof, figure inside. Vesta letters thosent look good to. And that face looks not good to.

This question has left me shaking my head. I can not comment on the RIC number for the coin because I do not own that volume of RIC. I found the following listing interesting:
    http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2114195
If correct, this has a really small Lugdunum ball on the bust point but I can not use this listing as 'expert' since they call the coin an 'as' when it clearly has the II dupondius mark. I am no expert. Are they? Is this coin tooled?

The Coin Project link given by Ides bothers me by lot listing the II as part of the legend even though it is noted in the description. A resource like Coin Project requires everyone follow the same input parameters if the result is to be valuable. I stopped uploading coins since none were ever verified. Expecting all to work together would seem to be more a miracle than a project.

If we are voting on the Vesta, I'd agree it has serious questions. I am simply not expert in 12 Caesars stuff so my opinion is not significant. Would I buy it? No.

I am a little surprised that Roma would include that Nero in their sale. They generally have very high quality coins and I should hope they look at every one to spot fakes. This one should not pass a quick inspection.

thought i'd resurrect this thread to post my new (and first) nero coin...since this thread pushed me over the edge. just could go "neroless" any longer! plus, it's a alexandrian tet, which i always dig.
