I have a 1799 dollar, probably F15. It's in an airtite but wondered for preservation, should I send it out? It's a nice coin but not especially valuable except to me.

My personal opinion would be to get it certified. I like having serial numbers for my favorite pieces, along with the authentication and preservation. But that's just my personal preference.

It's in the airtight. It's being preserved. Now if you want it authenticated, then by all means send it out..........:)

    Reasons for Slabbing:
    1. Authentication (it's real)
    2. Originality (not cleaned or repaired)
    3. Grade

And a degree of protection from crime.

What do you think it's worth? It only costs about $30 to have a coin slabbed by NGC, so I don't understand the reluctance.

That's a $1000+ coin. If you plan to sell it anytime soon I would send it in. If not it's just fine the way you have it. There are several varieties of this date. Do you know the one you have?

Sorry, I don't mean to be vague, I think my question was less about actual value or even the cost of grading, but more about the condition relative to the importance of the coin. Does that make any sense? I think "important" coins should be third party graded but the definition of "important" varies so widely from collector to collector. I'm inconsistent on the value to importance ratio! I would not send in a circulated common date Morgan as it's not an important piece but my 1893-S did go in. I did grade a 1795 (2 leaves) dollar that's only VG10 and thought that made sense. The 1799 dollar (R-5) is more common but comes from an important period of American history, plus there are counterfeits so I will send it in. It was my first coin dated in the 1700s and I bought it 25 years ago. Thanks as always for all your thoughts.

Not a dumb question, I love the history and if the coin has a certain sentimental meaning then I'll get it verified as authentic. A PCGS holder will insure the value and importance of the coin.

Any coin I own worth over $500 is going to be certified at some point, if only for authentication purposes.

True, but the OP says this is a $1000 coin. I say there is no reason to wait. Send it in!
