i was looking at this, seller not accepting PayPal . Coin not in PCGS database ? Did I look it up wrong? View attachment 422191
Look at this on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=121686287555&globalID=EBAY-US 1854-D $5.00 Gold Half Eagle Dahlonega MS-62 PCGS
Report away people, big time fake. And it looks at least MS62 to me, if it was real. Not sure why it wouldn't. I think it is fake though.
Something definitely seems off. The first thing I noticed is the 2 different images. The first is on a white background, no stickers. The second (reverse) has a darker background and an obvious sticker on the front of the slab which is missing in the first shot. 2 different images from 2 different photographers of 2 different coins I would think.
I don't think we have enough evidence yet to jump to that conclusion. A call to PCGS to verify the cert # would solve this
I'm guessing the first image is photoshopped, and the second is borrowed from another source. I'd be surprised if there's even a fake coin to go with this auction.
Well they say they don't take Paypal but weren't even smart enough to set up the listing that way. The real reason they don't want PP is because likely they only have the Ebay account not the persons PP account so sent funds would end up out of their reach. But a money order, etc would allow them to get away with the funds. Hopefully it's pulled before a stupid enough buyer falls prey.
I buy a lot, all of my collection through ebay and pay with paypal. Plus I live outside of the US. I am having trouble paying one seller at the moment and paypal is trying to help me pay that seller. Sellers can refuse non-US paypal payments, not sure why they would refuse to be paid. But paypal is a recognized global payment company.
It may be that the seller does not wish to ship outside the US. There are risk. Sometimes the buyer is not aware of the customs fees and will not pay them. Now there is the risk that the coin will not make it back to the seller but paypal will take the money back from the seller and give it back to the buyer.
RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY! For starters, that coin is WAY overgraded and has been harshly cleaned. I think one of the major certifiers (NGC, PCGS) would give it a "details" grade. Given that and the odd business about Paypal, I would wager this is a counterfeit coin.
Fair comment ldhair! I do see a lot that will not ship to me outside of the US so I have changed my mailing address to my US address. Works so far except for one seller I am having trouble with him accepting my payment - to ship to my US address. Not funny business, but an unusual challenge. I'm not sure about other countries, but the country I live in at the moment makes it my responsibility to receive it through customs if it is flagged. I'm not sure if the seller is protected if I don't receive it. Have not had this happen yet.
