a republican AE as has been on my hit list for quite some time, i have a thing for large coins so that bumped it up to the topish part of my list. i snagged this sweet coin off ebay. from seller... Roman Republic, c. 169 - 158 BC, bronze as of A. CAE, Obverse: Laureate bust of Janus. Reverse: ROMA|I|A.CAE, prow r. Reference: Crawford 174/1. Ex. RBW, purchased from R. Schaefer 12/10/1993 my measurements: 33 mm, 31.8 g i ran into things about this RBW fellow before, and looked some other stuff up. i guess he had a MASSIVE collection of republican bronze coin. looks like in 2011 and 2012, many were sold off. have a little coffee stained paper envelope with the dude notes, kind of cool. anyway, now it's in the chrsmat71 collection. big, sweet, green, and HEAVY..feels super in hand. feel free to pile on your republican AE coins!
I have very few and would like some as nice as yours. My best is this sextantal series as. It's main virtue is weight of a full 40.0g. The series is named for the as weighing the original 'liberal' series sextans or 1/6 as. My other one is half as big at 18.27g. In theory, weights were specified by law but coin exist over such a range that it is hard to tell where one series starts and the earlier one stops as far as I'm concerned. At 14.17, this uncia (1/12 as) is from the earliest struck series. Earlier uncia were cast.
I used to look for these, but never found one in good enough shape at my price point. This would have met my requirements. Nice find.
As Bing mentions, I am also looking for one as nice as yours or Doug's but haven't found one I truly love at a price I could live with---but there's always tomorrow LOL

Junius Silanus, who commanded the army that was defeated by the Germanic Cimbri in Transalpine Gaul. Decimus was the stepfather of Marcus Brutus, the murderer of Caesar, having married his mother Servilia. He was elected consul in 63 for the following year ; and in consequence of his being consul designatus, he was first asked for his opinion by Cicero in the debate in the senate on the punishment of the Catilinarian conspirators. He was consul 62, with L. Licinius Morena, along with whom he proposed the Lex Licinia Julia". Q
David Hendin has been selling many of these ex-RBW Republican bronzes for some time now. I never seem to be able to win one. Yours is really nice, Chris.
Super sweet new AE-RR addition, my friend!! (yummy) ... curious, is that something hovering above your cool OP coin's deck? I have a couple as well (you've seen 'em, but here they are again!!) AE Anonymous Semis (with Dolphin down front) AE Anonymous Quadrans (with Elephant) AE Anonymous As (with sucklin' wolf) AE Anonymous As (with The Fly) ... all very cool ...
Before today I didn't have any of these Roman republic "prow" AEs. Of course after seeing this thread, I had to go right that wrong and it pushed me over the edge about a coin I had been thinking about buying. I'll be sure to post some pictures once I get this one and the Republican Denarius I ordered with it in-hand: Roman republican Æ Semuncia(5.50g), anonymous. 217-215 BC. Head of Mercury right, wearing winged petasos / Prow right; ROMA above. Crawford 38/7; Sydenham 87.
oh wow, that's a nice one RS...mercury looks fantastic. i have a rough semuncia i kind of forgot about, shame on me... stevex that is one sweet republican bronze line up!
Cluvius Saxula Æ As. Uncial standard Laureate head of bearded Janus; I (mark of value) above Prow of galley right; I (mark of value) to right. Crawford 173/1; Sydenham 360
Anonymous Trienes Helmeted Minerva Prow Andrew McCabe Collection (candidate for re-photographing...I suck) L. Cornelius Cinna AE quadrans Hercules right, 3 pellets behind Cinna above, ROMA in ex. Prow galley right, 3 pellets BMCRR 807, Crawford 178/4 Uncia 215 BC
Hmmm, I feel like the only one missing even one example of these types...the closest I have is one of Pompey (Jani-form) with a barely discernible prow on the reverse... Oh well, another thing to consider at future auctions ... All terrific examples guys!!!
