Really? Other than the $3 gold, most of those don't carry a large numismatic premium in absolute terms. Are you considering this a bullion purchase or a numismatic purchase?

I'm not getting exactly that. I'm going to buy a twelve piece gold type set in the highest grade I can afford. And I consider it a little of both.

Not only do you save space, but these few coins are easier to "hide". Hence, a bit more secure, and instantly recognizable and transferable.

Given that APMEX, Provident and the like are sort of the last word in sight-unseen, bottom-line-driven dealers, it seems to me than buying graded coins there is a guaranteed way of getting the worst coins for the grade that you can find...?

I'd agree chances are that you will not receive a nice coin for the grade from them.

How about your local coin shows/coin shops where you can see the coins?

$15000 should be placed in approximately three different mutual funds and let it sit there for five years. I would find other money away from my investments to buy numismatic goodies.

The stock market will crash before then.

I like to invest in things that everyone in the world recognizes and finds value in.

Here is an example, if you travel the world and end up in some remote jungle, you have a million dollar painting, your stock portfolio, a rare piece of currency, a gun, a gold coin, a silver coin, your standing in front of a person that does not speak your language and probably has never seen a TV.....

I'm willing to bet the gold, silver and possibly the gun could get you some food.....the other things have no real value unless they are in the right market. The gold and silver are universal, they are recognized in every culture on the planet.
