I paid 13 dollars, dealer says EF, I say mid AU. My friend thinks it's uncirculated just a weak strike or flatness from storage. What do you think? Also, Did I get an ok deal?
If the coin in picture is a true color as "purplish" then it may be dipped. I did bought a set of dipped Lincoln coins for research purpose and your coin looks alike with my coins that has been confirmed as dipped. I may be wrong, but it's just the coin's color showed in your picture that gave me an impression that it has been dipped.
You could be right, the photo missrepresents the coin a little, taken in my window sill with outdoor lighting, it actually looks more blotchy in the normal lighting, you could be on to something. One more thing, not as purple as a weird light brown color in hand.
Looks to me like it could be a weak strike UNC coin, with all the luster peaking through. The halo effect seems to be there like on UNC coins. The color seems to be a bit dark, like it was soaked/dipped in ms70,olive/mineral oil then retoned in a widow sill or spent some time in the sun somewhere along the way which IMO would account for the blotchyness. Some like this dark chocolaty brown look (myself included) Regardless Great looking coin for $13.
When I was at a gun store this dealer had a 1909-P v.d.b for $14 I tried to buy it but realized it was his son's coin, I paid him 12 and I thought it was a good buy in AU condition what do you think I'll enjoy your opinion. GL&HH
There's no way that's XF. Hard to tell exactly from the pictures, but it's at least high AU, and possibly MS with a weak strike. I agree about the color -- it looks funny.
I'm good at AU-something. I like the purple. You don't see very many of those. They're caused by the desert heat. Indirect sun, but very low moisture. There are cactus flowers that are that color when they're shaded in the afternoon by a big tree or a rock or hill. Both sides toned like that because of the radiant heat bouncing back up from the ground. Judging from the richness, I'm supposing it took, maybe, 7-9 years?
Also, the coin dealer had 8 more between $14-$18, he said grades between VF-BU, but I swear, all of them were at least AU and has great luster, one was perfect RB too.
It could be he either, isn't good at grading lwc, or he is selling them as EF due to the past dipping. Still a pretty coin.
Btw, there's no way you're going to get "flatness from storage" on a coin, unless you're storing it unprotected and underneath hundreds of pounds of stuff.
Oh... I read that somewhere and was kind of confused, I guess I should not become dependent on everything I read online
