It's hard to tell from the pictures but I'm 99% sure that's not a close-Am, sorry.

What makes you think this coin is a proof?

 

I was told so by a neighbor. It has a grainy luster and ultra shine.

 

With all due respect, I think your neighbor has a bit more to learn about identifying proof coins...

Better than the gap between AM or the initials, IMO, is font style. Look again at the image @Hommer posted.

Notice the A:

On the WAM, the A is skinnier with the slanted vertical bars at a steeper angle. The left bar is much thinner than the right, giving the central triangle an off center look to it.

On the CAM, the A is wider with the slanted vertical bars having a less extreme angle. The left bar is only slightly thinner than the right, allowing for a more centered appearance to the inner triangle.

This is just my personal observations. It works better for me than taking a micrometer to the gap or troubling myself to magnify the initials.

Truly there are great vicissitudes in temper and decorum on this forum. It is truly a pity. One might indeed feel both insulted and encouraged from reply to reply. I will agree that, since it has no s on it that it can not be a proof, or that which I believed a proof to be. But the utterly uncalled for curt and rude demeanor of some members is frightening. It is not rude to answer with a very brief comment, it is merely precise. not everyone feels the need to"sympathize" with a stranger that has just finding out what he thinks is a big find actually isn't
